Michael Warren Davis reviews Rod Dreher’s latest book. But aside from references to RBG, this tidbit surprised me:

"So long as Millennials remain dominant in American politics, this will remain the prevailing mode of discourse. My generation was abandoned by our parents and our teachers. We were never given a moral education for fear of stunting our individuality. We were never taught to reason. We were never taught to control our emotional or carnal impulses.

That’s why there isn’t one real “individual” in America under forty. We all became slaves to peer pressure, and to our own base appetites. That’s the great danger of this moment in American history. We are being ruled by children—children who can’t tell right from wrong, and who lack all self-control."

Living a Lie

I’ve heard the term perpetual adolescence before. It refers to people staying in a state of immaturity in some way or another. It definitely didn’t start with Millenials or even Gen X. There were plenty of Boomers who fit that description. I would gather that the Peter Pan types are that way because they can be. There really aren’t many requirements anymore to being a “grown up”. In fact it’s been getting easier by the decade. Pretty much any moron can buy a house or take their car to a mechanic. Not to mention the ease of every other aspect of life these days. Which is why I find the talk about “adulting” to be nothing more than an invention of pop culture. I think I could safely assume that growing into adulthood has been difficult for most generations, and isn’t necessarily more difficult for this one.
