Book Suggestions for a young teen

I’m trying to help my Granddaughter who is struggling through her early teens (she’s 14). She is mainly unchurched.

We were talking on FB and I asked her what she like to read. Her response was, “Kristen and P.C Cast’s ‘House of Night’ books”. These are a “vampire” series and while I don’t want to “freak out” on this, I would like to maybe find something that would expand her horizon’s a bit…Something more positive and not so dark.

I was wondering if there are Christian counterparts to these types of books that I might suggest to her.

Any Ideas??

Vampires are fashion now. I did not know America was the same…
Horrible.
Let them read.
What I think pleases more teens is:

  1. *]biographies of great heroes
    *]books made for them for their problems
    *]very small books that they can read fast

    ready to help
 
The Giver and Gathering Blue, by Lois Lowry are perfect and will capture her attention. Hannah Hunard’s Hind’s Feet on High Places. I go to Amazon and search words like Abraham, Moses, etc. When you read the reviews of the books that come up (such as; Abraham, Rebekkah, the Acts of Faith series), there you will find out how closely related to history the story is yet, it is typically a love story or the truth in a fun, fictional story form of that person’s life. She is so lucky to have a loving grandmother such as you.

I know they aren’t exactly new books… but the Chronicles of Narnia are excellent books for young kids with a very strong Christian theme. I gave them to my daughters. The school send s a list all of the time with recommended reading and I honestly find them to be… well mostly secular. I too need to find some good, Catholic writers for youth and teens.
 
I would look at Sophia Institute Press and Chesterton Press. They both have a number of fiction titles that are geared towards that age demographic. I haven’t read any of them myself, but I’ve heard good things.

Ignatius Press also has their Vision Series, which is a series of 28 books on the lives of the saints and is written at that age level. If your granddaughter is unchurched, you’ll have to discern whether she’d be open to that or not.

And, of course, if she starts to become more interested in the Catholic Church, the YouCat is a great resource for explaining what the Church teaches and why.

Sometimes it’s easier to get to the Christian themes with a kid this age by going sideways. Have you ever read Watership Down?

The Narnia books are an interesting idea…I should have thought of that one on my own…😊

Haven’t read Watership Down…But then I’m not much of a fiction reader myself.

Basically I’m looking for things that are more uplifting than I suspect “vampire” books are likely to be.

I appreciate everyone’s suggestions so far.

A friend recommended the book “When Dreams Come True” by Eric & Leslie Ludy for me, and although it’s more on the female side of things, it’s a tremendous story. I’d highly recommend it!
