Hi!
I was wondering whether anyone could recommend any good orthodox books for engaged Catholic couples in order to be better prepared emotionally, spiritually, intelectually and psychologically for marriage…?

Many thanks,

A girl who love the Church

Great question! It seems like couples spend more time planning a wedding than preparing for marriage. I would love to know of some resources that I could share with engaged couples.

“marriage is for keeps” (wedding edition)

“the good news about sex and love” by christopher west

“the proper care and feeding of husbands” by dr. Laura
(no really, it is a secular-yet-awesome book)

“marriage: a path to sanctity”

“life giving love” by kimberly hahn

Just a few that we read before our big day!
God bless and good luck with your wedding and marriage!

I was totally surprised to find out how wonderful the book Love Letters To My Husband (a book about the life of Saint Gianna) was for our new marriage. It’s a great tool for soon to be wives. 👍

MrS:
Bishop Sheen’s book Three To Get Married
:clapping: 👍

I second that suggestion! Awesome book.

Girl who Loves the Church,

You may also want to check out:
  1. **“By Love Refined: Letters to a Young Bride” **by Dr. Alice von Hildebrand. You can read an excerpt of the wonderful book here: ewtn.com/library/Marriage/SIPBYLOV.HTM but I recommend buying the book or else you miss the some of the real gems in it!
  2. “**Marriage: The Mystery of Faithful Love” **by Dietrich von Hildebrand (Alice’s husband!). This book is much more theological and philosophically challenging, but if you are up to it I have found it one of the most insightful and systematic presentation of the meaning of marriage. You can view an excerpt here: ewtn.com/library/Marriage/SIPMARRG.HTM
The incredible love story of Dietrich and Alice is very moving. Dietrich has passed away, but Alice continues to teach and write. When you hear her speak of her husband the devotion and love is almost palpable.

I also recommend **THE **Book. By that I mean the Living Word of God – Christ present in the Blessed sacrament. Spend time in Eucharistic adoration if you can, with your fiancee. Christ is the King of All Hearts, and He loves weddings! Include him in your preparation! Invite him to your own little Cana. 🙂

God bless you!

I believe the Church has much wisdom to offer here. Although much of this applies to married couples, this is engagement usually leads to:

Please check out the below documents from the Church:

Arcanum - Pope Leo XIII - 1880

Casti Connubii - Pope Pius XI - 1930

Familiaris Consorto - Pope JP II - 1981

Letter to Families - Pope JP II - 1994

These are available at: dads.org/church_main.asp

God bless,

Larry

Oh thank you all so much! They’re really great suggestions!

The above are all good recommendations.

A book that I just read (I am also engaged) that I think will help alot in the emotional aspect of marriage, is the “Five Love Languages.”

It speaks of how people show love and feel loved in certain ways. Therefore, if your spouse feels loved in one way, but you show love in another way, the spouse may not have their emotional love needs fulfilled. This book will help know your own love language and your spouses love language so as to fill each other’s emotional needs.

For instance, my fiance’s primary love language is physical affection. My primary love language is quality time. For awhile I was not meeting her needs (I do not come from a touchy-feely, hugging family, my fiance does) and it put a strain in our relationship. She could not put a finger on it, but once she read the book, she told me to read it. I have since been working on ways to fill her love tank and our relationship is soaring.

Our goal is to work on all five love languages so that we can fill each other’s emotional needs abundantly, and also be prepared for the differing love needs of our children.

Anyways, I highly recommend it. The author is a christian (it is quite clear in his writing), although I do not know if he is Catholic or not.

God Bless.

I just got married last weekend. My husband and I used “For Better… Forever” by Greg Popcak during our engagement. It’s a book, but each chapter has questions for reflection and discussion. I highly recommend this thoroughly Catholic book. It has helped us a lot as we transition into marriage.
