What books would all of you recommend for spiritual development? The books would be aimed at someone who already understands the requirements of the Catholic faith but wants to develop a deeper spirituality. Which books have helped you do that or made a deep impact on your spiritual life?
Thanks for your suggestions.

It depends on how deep you want. There are many spiritual writings that are good, some are more serious than others. John of the Cross’ writings are serious. Walter Hilton is a little less serious.

The Imitation of Christ (Creasy translation is the one I like best)

Matt:

There’s more books for an entire lifetime here. Here’s some:

St. Julian Eymard’s Eucharistic Retreats and the rest of the series
St. Teresa of Avila’s Interior Castle
Francisco Carvajal’s Lukewarmness: The Devil in Disguise
St. Josemaria Escriva: The Way, The Furrow and The Forge
Benedict Bauer’s In Silence With God
This Tremendous Lover (author I can’t seem to remember)
Bish. Fulton Sheen: Life of Christ
Thomas a Kempis: Imitation of Christ (someone suggested too)

These are all great books to start. All easy to find in local catholic bookstores.

I’m really enjoying St. Francis de Sales’s “Introduction to the Devoted Life.” Well I should re-phrase that - I thoroughly loved the beginning of it, but I’m getting a tad bogged down in the middle, but I think I’m going to blame this sinus infection that is making it hard for me to focus on any reading of any depth at the moment (I read Scott Hahn’s book “Hail Holy Queen” today, and while I got a lot out of it, I know I will get tons more out of it when I re-read it when I’m not sick, LOL)

Hello,

I’d highly recommend the ‘Diary of St. Faustina’. It’s an amazing book which gives a lot of insight into suffering. Her relationship was incredibly intimate.

I can’t recommend Frances Fernandez’s “In Conversation With God” enough. It is probably the best spiritual reading purchase I’ve ever made. It is definitly worth the cost.

"For those seriously seeking to grow in holiness and bring some order to their daily prayer life, I strongly recommend this series. Drawing upon Sacred Scripture, the writings of the saints, and his own life experiences, the author brings together three daily meditations (about five to ten minutes each) that center around the Scripture readings of the Mass that day.

Imparted in these meditations are knowledge of the faith, advice on how to pray more fervently, and a clear understanding of virtue and its importance. It also inspires us to serve God faithfully. A good Catholic answer to the latest Protestant craze over “The Purpose Driven Life”."

“Uniformity with God’s Will” by Alphonse (sp?) Liguori . It’s an inexpensive booklet full of good ideas. I wish I did not react so often or hold in anger about what someone says that offends me before utilizing his ideas first…
Fr. Amorth has a lot of good things to know about Satan’s activity as well.
