A week or so ago, Dr. Scott Hahn was on Kresta in the Afternoon talking about Scripture Study. During the interview, it was mentioned that Dr. Hahn wrote Understanding the Scriptures - A Complete Course on Bible Study which is published by Midwest Theological Forum.

I went out to their web site and saw quite a few books tha I may be interested in. One is a series call The Didache Series - Complete Collection which includes the book by Scott Hahn.

I am wondering if anyone else has any experience with books from the company. One note, I do own Handbook of Prayers.

I have seen the scripture study by Scott Hahn and know of some who have used it. They all loved it.

we use the Didache books for our HS CCD text. Introduction to Catholicism for 9th & 10th grade, Our Moral Life in Christ for 11th & 12th grade. We have just ordered the Scripture book for review but out of stock. church history is taught in 8th grade using our elementary text series from Loyola Press, Christ our Life. We also use Intro to Catholicism for adult confirmation and RCIA classes.

they are fine books, but way above the reading level of most of our students. there is a lesson plan and catechist guide, but because so many students come to Confirmation prep after a lapse of several years after 1st Communion with no real formal religious ed, we have to break up into sections, with a lot of remedial work on the basics. the catechists use the texts as a starting point, but not the entire class.

The catechists love the books for their clear thorough presentation, but a class where kids just read from the book and answer questions just does not work here. The older kids who are helping as aides after their own confirmation actually love the books because they feel they are getting these presentations for the first time. they take turns doing teaching sessions and do rely on the textbooks.

I used the Didache as a reference for my two 8th grade Confirmation Classes I taught in College. The Catholic Center wouldn’t swing for the textbooks, but it was approved to be used as a reference. So, I taught out of the book. Really liked it and it is really firm theologically.

All books coming from MTF are very strictly orthodox. It is an extremely faithful publisher.

I believe that MTF is an Opus Dei related publishing house. They’re solid.
