In reading Salt of the Earth by Pope Benedict XVI, it seems he is a great admirer of St. Augustine.

What are some good book on Augustine, especially when it come to his Theology and Philosophy. The only one I have found so far that looks interesting is Augustine of Hippo by Peter Brown.

What better book can I recommend than his on semi-autobiographical philosophical/theological tract “Confessions”. I don’t know the state of your theological knowledge, but this book is open to anyone, and can give a person so much.

If you want soemthing more challenging try his “City of God” this is a hefty tome, but has some great insights, and points that could be easily transferred to the modern world.

I have both and Trinity. I am looking for a general book that summarized his Spirituality/Theology/Philosophy. He seem to be one of the few more famous Saints that there is not much in summary form. There are a bunch of books on saints like St. Thomas Aquinas.

For example, Augustine was more of a Platonist and Aquinas was more of a Arisotilian.

Fr. Benedict Groeschel, a great admirer of St. Augustine has a book out, a compilation of Augustine’s major writings.

Here is an editorial review:

Groeschel’s charming little introduction to St. Augustine as a spiritual writer is something like a portable tutorial, full of helpful hints and suggestions for further reading as well as insights that are accessible without being condescending. The author approaches his subject with Franciscan humility and humor that is most appropriate for an introduction. The tone is conversational, integrating selections from a wide range of Augustine’s work and a healthy sampling of the great variety of available translations with Groeschel’s own reflections. The book ends, appropriately, with a reading program instead of a bibliography; it is likely also to end with readers inspired to pursue it. Steve Schroeder

Although the link did not have the title, I am assuming you are talking about **Augustine : The Confessions & the City of God **
by Fr. Benedict Groeschel. I will check it out. I have read **Heaven in Our Hands: Receiving the Blessings We Long for **by him and enjoyed it. I will check it out.

Yes, that is the one Wander – sorry for not including the link to it (or even typing the title. . . LAZY :o )

Caveat emptor: I haven’t read the book myself. I just know how much Fr. Groeschel is devoted to St. Agustine and presume that this was a labor of love for him.

Good luck!

I’ve read Brown’s biography - it’s brilliant. I believe Brown’s considered the leading scholar on Augustine (in the English language, at least). It’s a hefty read, but it really gave me a better appreciation for the St.

God bless.

Thanks for the link. I thought of checking their site out but remembered how hard it was to find things on it. I see they redid their web site.

Ain’t has heavy as some of St. Augustine’s writings. I am up to the chapter on Confesssions. So far, I have found it to be a very easy read.

Wonderful! 👍

You are so welcome. I’ too have found some good books because people have mentioned them here on the forums.

Maybe I should pick that one up too, huh?🙂
