Looking for some books on Feudalism and the Middle Ages. Especially the political, cultural and military aspects. Any suggestions?

On the face of it, that’s a vast subject you’re asking to cover — the economic and social history of every country in Europe, for the whole length of the thousand-year period that followed the collapse of the Roman Empire.

Since you’re a Christian and you’re asking this question on a Catholic website, here’s a book that might be a good place to start. It’s a 500-page history of the conversion of all those countries in Europe that had never been part of the Roman Empire. It begins with St Martin of Tours, who was bishop there from the 370s onward, and ends with the conversion of Lithuania — the last country in Europe to accept the Christian faith — in 1386.

Fletcher’s book is packed with insights into social and economic conditions the length and breadth of Europe and — an important consideration — he has the gift of making every sentence interesting. He never taxes the reader’s patience. On the contrary, his book is not only informative, it’s enjoyable as well.

Thanks much I will look into it. I was not so much interested in the religious aspects as political, cultural, and warfare. I should have been more specific.

Maccullochs Christianity: the first three thousand years and also his Reformation are excellent, excellent titles

The political, cultural and warfare are very intertwined with religion during that period. I would say that if you ignore the religious component, you won’t get the full story! Just my little (name removed by moderator)ut here!

I agree fully but in the religious aspect i think I have it covered that is all.

Two books (maybe three).

THE YEAR 1000 by Robert Lacey. (What life was like at the turn of the first millennium.)

THE BARBARIANS by Timothy Newark. (Warriors and wars of the Dark Ages.)

(maybe) GUNS, GERMS, AND STEEL by Jared M. Diamond. (If people all started at the same level, why are there different levels now?)
