Hi,
I am trying to study history such that it will help me to understand the history of the Catholic Church and Christianity as a whole. Are there books or maybe a list of books that will help me better understand the action of God in history, especially through His Church better? Thanks for any reading and study suggestions.
God bless you. Amen.

Warren Carroll’s The History of Christendom series is so good. I think there are six volumes which are all huge. I’ve been reading it for three years and am on the fourth book. It is an exhaustive yet good history. Very readable.

The History of the Catholic Church by James Hitchcock
A Concise Historyof the Catholic Church by Thomas Bokenkotter
How the Catholic Church Built Western Civilization by Thomas E Woods and Antonio Canizares
Triumph: The power and Glory of the Catholic Church by H. W. Crocker III

I have read all of these and they are all good books and good reads.

There is also the three volume A History of the Church by Philip Hughes (1947, Sheed & Ward). It will only take you from the founding of the Church to the early 1500s, but it is comprehensive for that period.

I have also read the aforementioned Church histories by James Hitchcock and H. W. Crocker, and I second their recommendation. I think it is also worth keeping in mind that even the best historians often can’t seem to resist including their own erudite opinions and conclusions as they present the facts, which I personally don’t mind as long as it’s kept to a minimum.

Eusebius if you want a very early history by someone there at the turn of Christianity being made legal.
