I would like some suggestions for books on the Rosary…

Paperbacks would be preferred as I don’t have a lot of money-- but I have come to the conclusion that I need to pray the Rosary every day and I want to know a lot more about it…

How it came about, history, ways to pray the Rosary, various forms-- etc.

All suggestions are welcome…

There are two great books on the Rosary.
  1. Rosary: Mysteries, Meditations, and the Telling of the Beads by Kevin Orlin Johnson
This book gives a history of the Rosary and walks you through the prayers and mysteries.
  2. The Secret of the Rosary by St. Louis De Montfort
This is a classic that will drive home the importance of the Rosary. You can find it free online and in many places on Amazon.
These two are great to start with.

I have to let others recommend the books. I’ve never seen many whole books devoted to it, but I’d like to see for myself something about different forms of the rosary, like the Franciscan Rosary.

I like the idea of do-it-yourself rosaries, like saying a decade of the rosary for each of the beatitudes.

If you have access to EWTN on cable, there are a couple versions of the rosary which you may want to record on your DVR or purchase. If you have a EWTN radio station nearby, you might catch Fr. Groeschel (of blessed memory) at 9:30 p.m. eastern time.

I haven’t checked, but I bet you could pray along with a video on youtube.com. I meant to check for such, but haven’t gotten around to it.

As far as free publications (online) go to the EWTN website, to the document library, and search on the word “Rosary” and see what you can come up with there.

then, again, you might just do a google search for the rosary online, for something to pray along with.

I have both of these and they are awesome. There’s a new one out that I intend to get pretty soon, called "Praying the Rosary with Pope Francis." It’s $10.79 on eBay which includes postage, 40 pages. Published in May 2014.

Get yourself the little book called “the Scriptural Rosary”. It is the way the rosary was once prayed. It is beautiful and powerful…and the pictures are lovely too.

‘The Rosary’, by Garry Wills is very good. Wills describes how the Rosary is “deeply grounded in scripture and theology” and a way for Catholics to “participate in the life of Christ’s mystical body”. He provides the Gospel texts for the mysteries that are meditated upon and suggests reflections for each. The book includes colorful reprints of Tintoretto paintings related to the mysteries.

Will is Wills, however, and he gets his little digs in, as always, and if one can put up with that and see it for what it is, there is otherwise good and informative material in the book.

The Rosary: Chain of Hope by Father Benedict Groeschel.

If you don’t have a lot of money, you may consider going to the library to check the books out. Once you’ve read several you can decide which ones are worth buying or not and go from there. If your library doesn’t have them, then many libraries in the country belong to different consortiums that can get books for you from other libraries. You would be amazed at what a wide variety of books libraries have.

Also, check out archive.org and type “rosary” into the search box. You’ll get a few results that aren’t on topic, however they have excellent scans of early 20th century and late 19th century rosary prayer books that you can view online or download as a .PDF. All of these things are in the public domain so there are no worries about copyright or having to pay for them. These books include meditations, awesome artwork, and some have extended essays by different bishops, cardinals, and priests.
