What are the best books to help discover one’s vocation?

Please give some details/reviews if possible. Thanks!!

Priest is a good book to start with perhaps. It is written by the same guy who have written “goodbye good men” and “ugly as sin” it is 10 portraits of excellent priests.

I noticed your avatar and byline quoting St. Pio. Here is a book on vocations writen by a priest who was guided in his vocation by St. Pio, himself. Indeed, he was Padre Pio’s altar boy in Pietrelcina!

Come Follow Me

Here’s the description:
An excellent book on vocations. St. John Bosco held that, “A third of our young people carry the seed of a priestly and religious vocation.” If this is true then, why are there not more vocations? The author answers many questions of men and women aspiring to the priestly or religious life by quoting extensively from Scripture and the words and example of the saints and popes an invaluable book for promoting a better understanding and appreciation of vocations to the consecrated life.
I found it to be excellent.

“The World’s First Love,” Archbishop Sheen’s book on Mary, has some good chapters on virginity and on openness to God’s will. It’s a wonderful read.

The one book that has helped me a whole lot, and was suggested to me by a Traditional Priest, was “An Introduction to the Devout Life” by St. Francis de Sales.

This one isn’t even just for religious, but for everyone including lay people.

One statement in there that really stood out. You can’t just not want to sin, you have to come to the point that even if the sin was “legal” you still wouldn’t want to do it. That is not a quote, but close enough. I have never read a book, other than the Bible, that I felt like I was progressing in life. Be sure to read the introduction, the book is a lot better that way.

I’d like to read this book very much, and it is currently not available on amazon, could anyone recommand whereto buy it best? (It has to be shipped to Germany… - wouldn’t be willing to pay 10 $ shipping for 5$-purchase)

Cran, that’s a tough one. All I can suggest is that you request that a bookstore local to you stock it, which will require some patience. Alternatively, you may amortize the shipping charge by buying additional books along with Come Follow Me. Fr. Manelli also wrote an excellent biogarphy of Padre Pio, with many first-hand accounts coming from his close personal relationship with the saint, titled Padre Pio of Pietrelcina, available from the same source.

You can never have too many good books, I’ll try ordering some more then, thank you 🙂
