My daughter is reading the books by Stephanie Meyers. Does any one know anything about these? Are the okay for teens to be reading?

How old is your daughter? I never heard of the author, so went to Amazon and found this from the first of her novels. (and they’re classified horror for teens)

Amazon.com
“Softly he brushed my cheek, then held my face between his marble hands. ‘Be very still,’ he whispered, as if I wasn’t already frozen. Slowly, never moving his eyes from mine, he leaned toward me. Then abruptly, but very gently, he rested his cold cheek against the hollow at the base of my throat.”
As Shakespeare knew, love burns high when thwarted by obstacles. In Twilight, an exquisite fantasy by Stephenie Meyer, readers discover a pair of lovers who are supremely star-crossed. Bella adores beautiful Edward, and he returns her love. But Edward is having a hard time controlling the blood lust she arouses in him, because–he’s a vampire. At any moment, the intensity of their passion could drive him to kill her, and he agonizes over the danger. But, Bella would rather be dead than part from Edward, so she risks her life to stay near him, and the novel burns with the erotic tension of their dangerous and necessarily chaste relationship.

Doesn’t sound like something I’d want a young teen reading…

That is what I thought also. I would not let her purchase the second book. Unfortunately, I was too late on the first. She had already read it. Of course got the universal “but everyone is reading them mom”. Too bad. I felt good about my decision, but wanted to double check with my fellow Catholics. Thank you.
🙂

You’re welcome 👍

I have a real problem with the description of this book, especially the “erotic tension” part, when it’s supposed to be geared to teens. They have enough problems with tv commercials, print ads, etc. coming at them from every direction that are bordering on porn. With their hormones raging, it’s tough enough.

I’ve read Twlight. It’s actually much tamer than it appears. Think a PG movie. Most high schools carry it. Bella and Edward even make the decision not to have sex until they get married. It’s more about suspense and romance than anything sexual. Stephenie Meyer is a devout Mormon, and doesn’t want to write anything against her faith.

I also read “Twilight” (the first one) and agree with the above comments. There’s a bit of racy tension (“erotic” seems too strong a word) much like the excerpt that was already mentioned, however the girl is 17, I think, and fascinated by the boy. It’s not great literature, but I think it’s relatively safe, assuming your daughter is probably 14+…maybe younger, depending on her maturity level.

She reminds me of Annette Curtis Klause. She wrote the “Blood and Chocolate” and “Silver Kiss” books that I read when I was a preteen. It’s supernatural, but really the focus is on an outsider character who isn’t understood by her classmates, which is why so many teens are attracted to these books.

Give the Stephanie Meyer books a read yourself (they’re not too long) and see what you think.

Having read all three of the Stephanie Meyers books I can say that they pretty good. I wouldn’t suggest them to anyone under fourteen or fifteen though. I’ve also read Blood and Chocolate, not nearly as good, and definitely more racy.

So this book has been brought to my attention and the first movie Twilight will be coming out on the feastday of Our Lady of Guadalupe.

First, the fourth book is due August 2. Last of the series. This book is very popular, so before I could answer some questions that were brought up to me, I ended up reading her 3 books she has before forming an opinion. (I knew nothing about them beforehand)

In a nutshell, the book is a teen romance between a vampire and human. (book 3 has a love triangle between vampire/werewolf/human)

The thing that sticks out the most, most shockingly, is the redundant use of the word soul, and the repeating, “Your soul is yours/mine” and I would rather die without you type of romance. It’s been compared to Romeo and Juliet.

So I was just asking, what are your thoughts? Have you heard/read/seen these books? I’m very wary of books that deal with vampires/werewolves but the fact that she would rather risk hell (her soul will be damned by becoming a vampire) than be separated from the one she loves. (ironically, who wants to kill her all throughout book one; he loves her and her blood) Ironically again, the vampire wants to keep her human so she can go to heaven. The fourth book may redeem them all, but it definitely can’t fix the theme of “I’d rather lose my soul than be separated from you” throughout the 3 books.

Anyway, from a youth minister perspective, teens are heavily influenced by the media. My voice of reason says EXTREME CAUTION for teens, especially those who are not grounded in their faith AND dealing with relationship issues. (the whole “I can’t live without you” takes a depression/suicidal tone in book 2). While some may not agree with me on the EXTREME CAUTION for teens (if you can’t avoid it all together), it’s not an opinion I don’t think I’ll change.

If anything, a heads up.

God Bless.

I actually just finished reading Twilight, and am now reading the second one. I look at these books as strictly a form of entertainment. I’m 19 years-old and I have good, sound morals, so I know that reading about vampires won’t turn me against my faith or anything. I really don’t see anything wrong with reading them, as long as the readers aren’t very young, gullible, and have strong beliefs/faith that will unlikely waver from reading such things. Again, I loved the first book, as a form of entertainment. I’m a sucker for all things romance, so I quite enjoyed it.

I agree with you. I am a 29 year-old female(Yes Twilight is not just for Teens!) and follow my faith well and I do not see anything wrong with these books. The fact that they are not sleeping together I think is a positive influence. I am looking forward to the next book coming out and the movie. Stephenie Meyer’s(who is a devout Mormon) would not sell the rights to the movie company unless they agreed to keep it PG or PG-13.

Also while we are talking about Stephenie Meyer her new book The Host is excellent. I highly recommend it!!

The caution is for teens ***not ***grounded in the faith. Alot on CA work within youth groups here, so my post wasn’t necessarily against the pleasure for reading, especially if your grounded in the faith. The books are aimed at teens, yet not exclusively sold to teens.

And the fact that they aren’t having sex (they are together at night in her bedroom) is because he’s afraid to kill her. 👍 That definitely tops the pregnancy card! 😃

Anyway, every parent can choose what is appropriate for their child and every YM knows their youth group. This is just to get the discussion out there. Also, my point of view is highly influenced by the majority of youth I work with. Hope that helps some. 😉

The part in the book when they are in his bedroom he does say he doesn’t want to kill her and he is afraid if they were to have sex he would but further in the chapter when they are discussing it he finally admits to Bella that he does not want to take her virture away or his own because he says that is all he has left. That is why he wants to get married first.

True. However, he is willing to give up his virtue and hers at the end of book 3 regardless if that is all he has left.

She finally changes her mind to wait at the end of book 3. Redeeming on her part, yes. 🙂

I have to admit, it’s been awhile since I’ve read a book with vampires! And Meyer is really good inserting humor EVERYWHERE in her series.

I’ve read all 3 of these books and am impatiently waiting for book 4. I really think they are great books.
I do believe that if you can’t seperate fiction from real life, then you shouldn’t be reading any fiction! That includes Harry Potter, LoTR, Narnia, Twilight (all books I love).
I love how she is showing that even though you may want to do things (like have sex) you really should wait until marriage.

I would suggest the books to anyone wanting a fun read, but be wary because they will suck you in 🙂

And people who don’t like vampires: don’t go into reading this book thinking it’s just another vampire novel. It’s not, it’s really good.
I also like how the Cullens try to do what’s right with the hand they have been dealt (not like any of them asked for this), instead of taking the easy road out. Life is hard no matter what hand you are given, it’s what we do with our cards that wins us the game.

I agree with you…if you read this book you will be sucked in. LOL!! I can’t wait until Aug 2 when Breaking Dawn comes out. Are you excited about the movie in December? I have seen the teaser trailer and it looks like it is going to be good.

YES!! if I can find a babysitter then my friend and I will be at the midnight viewing (we do this with Harry Potter as well). 👍
MTV (which I don’t watch only found this out from a friend) has things called “Twilight Tuesdays”. They have interviews with the cast and a “completed scene” (the ballet studio) You can go to mtv.com and in the search box put in Twilight Tuesdays.
Lots of neat stuff out there to promote the movie already!

Yeah I don;t watch MTV either but I do check out Twilight Tuesday on their website. You should also check out twilightlexiconblog.com/ they also have up to date information. Just curious, have you read Stephenie Meyer’s new book The Host? It is really good!

I haven’t read The Host yet, but I plan to 🙂 I heard it was good. I just read the 3 Twilight books starting at the beginning of June… with kids and laundry I have to be a wife sometimes 😉 lol… I’ll read it soon.

Has anyone read this series? My two oldest - 16 yr. old said in his opinion it woud be fine for his sister to read (age 12). He said it’s just a harmless teen romance / fantasy story. They seem really popular - anybody read them them & can give this busy mom (who woud read them herself if she had time) an opinion?

Thanks!

My sister is 18 and she absolutely loves the series but she said she wouldn’t recommend it for a 12 yr. old. She said the first and second books are fine but the third and fourth books have some sexual innuendos. It never goes into detail about anything, but she said it implies it. She said the problem with only letting someone read just the first and second books, though, is that it’s kind of an addicting series. If you read the first book, you just have to read the rest of them. I just asked her if she would recommend them for a 12 yr. old girl and she said, “Um, no. Definitely not.”

So that’s her opinion…🤷
