I’m not so sure I’d use the word “stupid”–didn’t guns have a shorter range back then, less speed?
I mean it seems like it should be plausible…

Books won’t stop a bullet, especially those small New Testament only bibles we used to carry. Lots of weird things happen in a combat situation though and miracles do happen. Still do not bet the farm on it though.
