Books used during the mass

What books are being read during the mass? I know the Gospels, but is everything else comeing from the Missal? Im just curious because on the Altar when the preist is transforming the bred and wine to the body and blood…theres another book. im just wondering what that is called? so you have the gospels…the Missal…and the what ???

Yes, the prayers of the Mass come from the Missal on the altar (currently, in English, it’s called a “Sacramentary” but in about 2 years, it will be retitled to match the Latin name “Missale”). The readings and responsorial psalm come from the “Lectionary.”

Sometimes, priests may use two Sacramentaries, one at the chair and another at the altar. There is no difference between them - it is just for convenience.
 
In addition to what [user]AJV[/user] has noted, while the *Lectionary *contains all the readings and responsorial psalms, and may be the only volume used for proclaiming the readings, sometimes the Gospel is read from a distinguished *Book of the Gospels *(I’ve never heard it referred to by any other name?) which contains just the Gospel readings. AFAIK the only deciding factors are (i) does the parish own such a book, and (ii) does the priest celebrant choose to make use of it?

Also, though I presume you are speaking loosely, NB there is no *transformation *of the elements on the altar – The elements are transubstantiated, or the eucharist may be said to be confected, but the elements will retain the *forms *of bread and wine.

thanks guys…transubstaind lol thats the word i was looking for…well in reality it REALLY HAS been transformd…eucharistic mircles.
