I would probably say that you found a different job because you were concerned about the sudden downsizing in your department and wanted a position that you would not fear was going to be eliminated without notice. That would be why I’d find a different job. You’re not burning bridges with the people you worked for by saying you aren’t willing to hang around when there are unannounced firings going on. That is a logical move.If/when I do quit, what could I say? I was thinking to just tell him the truth, for the way he fired her.
You don’t have to tell him that you know he literally told the fired co-worker that the department was going to be eliminated. Having said that, he might even say, “You’re pretty smart; that’s why I like you. Yes, that department is going away, and you’re smart to find something else if you can.” That may be the truth, and he chose the one employee who he thought was most likely to be able to maintain the position single-handedly in the meantime.
Oh, well. It’s an HR mistake to scare the horses.
