Does using a beef stock cube to make gravy constitute eating meat?
Not techincally. From USCCB:****Q. ** I understand that all the Fridays of Lent are days of abstinence from meat, but I’m not sure what is classified as meat. Does meat include chicken and dairy products? **

A. Abstinence laws consider that meat comes only from animals such as chickens, cows, sheep or pigs — all of which live on land. Birds are also considered meat. Abstinence does not include meat juices and liquid foods made from meat. Thus, such foods as chicken broth, consomme, soups cooked or flavored with meat, meat gravies or sauces, as well as seasonings or condiments made from animal fat are technically not forbidden. However, moral theologians have traditionally taught that we should abstain from all animal-derived products (except foods such as gelatin, butter, cheese and eggs, which do not have any meat taste). Fish are a different category of animal. Salt and freshwater species of fish, amphibians, reptiles, (cold-blooded animals) and shellfish are permitted.

Thanks for your replies. I have given up meat completely for Lent (really missing it) but for my evening meal I usually cook some vegetables with fish. I find this a little insipid without a gravy made with vegetable juice plus two Oxo cubes. I have misgivings, however, that I may have broken my Lenten fast.

I’m not really sure now whether I ought to be having the gravy.

It is your decision on how extensive you want your penance to be. Personally I do not use juices either, but I do have a more strict rule to follow (which also includes Wednesdays) since I am a Byzantine Catholic. Look at what the minimum is for us: † Simple abstinence: forbids the use of meat, but permits the use of eggs and dairy products. All who receive Communion are required to abstain from meat on Wednesdays and Fridays of the Great Fast.
† Strict abstinence (fast): forbids the use and consumption of all meat, eggs and dairy products. All adults who receive Communion are required to abstain from meat, eggs, and milk products on the first day of Lent, Monday, and on Great and Holy Friday. Facsimiles, substitutes, and synthetic derivatives, although they are permitted, violate the intention and spirit of the law of strict abstinence.
† These are the minimum requirements; however, the faithful are encouraged to do more.

I remember a priest I know was telling me that once on Good Friday just after he helped set up the church for the Good Friday services he ran over to the Wendy’s near the church and was eating a double burger. He noticed some people from his parish there staring at him as they were eating their fish sandwiches. They asked him if his burger was good…that was when it dawned on him what he was doing…and on Good Friday of all days. Needless to say he really felt bad.

Well I have seen vegetarian pepperoni on sale at my local grocery store. There are usually more of them on sale especially around Lent.
Hi Sarcelle didnt know they sold vegetarian pepperoni any way it was just a joke Hope you have a blessed Lenten and Easter season.

If you “forget” it’s a Friday during Lent, maybe you’re not really paying attention to devotion during Lent!

I was in a similar situation two weeks ago - my professor brought kolaches to class on a Friday, and I, not thinking, took a bite out of one. After I had swallowed, I realized I wasn’t supposed to eat meat, so I set it down and saved the rest for breakfast. The sin is in the intention - since eating meat isn’t intrinsically evil, it is not a sin to eat meat on a Friday in Lent if you’ve legitimately forgotten. Once you are cognizant of the situation, however, you have to stop, or else it is a sin.
I thought kolaches were pastry made with a fruit or nut filling,
