This makes a lot of sense to me, Dom. I don’t understand people who immediately demonize stories for being one thing or another. However, I do understand people for criticizing stories that just, well, aren’t very good. And that’s what Avatar is. It’s not very good. Visually, it’s very impressive, but the narrative is tired. The characters are flat. The ending is unearned. That said, I was pretty impressed with the film as an entry into the science fiction genre. It was accessible and fun, more than can be said of most sci-fi.In other words, the purpose is to engage art in a “missionary” capacity. We are all called to be missionaries. If the art form is bad say what is bad. If there are good things, then say what is good.
