Hi! My name is Jasmine I’m 18 soon to be 19 I need one year left before I go to an university my boyfriend and I have a long distance relationship at the moment we are 4 hours away from each other and we are planning to attend the same university is it a sin to live together meanwhile be roommates? I’m catholic and he considers himself an atheist his family is catholic but they don’t practice it, although he does attend mass on Sundays even he doesn’t participate and we talked about it and agreed that if we can be roommates we weren’t going to have sex , we’re both virgins and what makes our relationship special is we have respect for one another (he takes care of me and I do the same for him)and we agreed to practice chastity and yes kiss but not go beyond as touching privates.

No, you should not live with your boyfriend. It would be an occasion of sin at best.

Focus on education when you enter college, not on romance.

Not a good idea for two key reasons:

a) It is a near occasion of sin. You may have all the best intentions to avoid sinning, but you are placing yourself in the direct path of serious temptation.

b) It gives scandal. Other people will assume you are in a sexual relationship, even if you are not, and this in itself is a problem.

There are also issues about what king of strain this could place on either one of you with regard to your relationship. How do you break off a dysfunctional relationship when you live together? Very messily.

At your age, and while you are not married, you still need your own time and space. Living with your boyfriend will not give you the freedom you need, to be your own person and make your own decisions.

Find a female room-mate and enjoy the university experience as it is meant to be enjoyed by young people. If your boyfirend is at the same university, even if you don’t live together, you will still have plenty of time to hang out.

With all due respect, there are two reasons why I think this is a bad idea for both of you.

The first and obvious problem is chastity. Both of you agree to be chaste. But it’s easier to do that now, when you are living with your families, than when you are around each other for an extended period of time in relative seclusion. My friend and his wife lived together during their engagement. He said it was difficult to honour their commitment to chastity. Arguably, if there are other people living with you, and if you have seperate bedrooms and toilets, it might be less problematic. However, you shouldn’t set yourself up for failure, and it’s actually a sin to do so.

Secondly, for many people the university years mark their transition from legal adulthood to full maturity. Most say that the first year is especially difficult if you have no previous experience travelling or living independently. By the time you reach thirty, both of you will probably lose touch with some of those dear to you – and yes, that includes each other. Remember that change is a necessary part of life. If you fit every decision around your relationship, it could not only distract you from your academic pursuits, but hinder your personal growth as well.
