Boyfriend needs an annulment

My boyfriend is seeking an annulment. He was married in a Protestant church. His ex had and still has untreated mental illness, of which he was unaware at the time. She was violent, abusive, and unfaithful. I’m not sure if they were open to life, but in their short marriage they had no kids. She has a child previously but I can’t recall if she was married before.

Without realizing it I’ve found myself in love with this man…in the “life is what happens to you while you’re busy making other plans” sense. I feel in over my head so pray for me too.

I personally don’t see how their marriage could be valid, but I can’t control the process. Also I fear his ex would try to mess up the annulment process ONLY to keep him from being with someone else, as she’s very angry and vindictive.

I’m asking prayers for God’s will in this, the age sends the right priests and canon lawyers, that there can be full honesty in the process, that God’s will be done, that the ex causes no trouble, and that he and I have strength in the meantime. In Jesus’ name.

I’m praying. May God prevent your boyfriend’s ex from interfering. May He also grant an annulment for him.

That’s interesting you chose St. Martin de Porres. One of my friends and I consider him a special patron.

There is nothing your boyfirend’s ex can do to mess up the annulment. In fact, the more she responds in a crazy manner, or in an accusatory manner about your boyfriend the more the evidence for annulment is shown.

Tell your boyfriend to go ahead with the application and to tell the witnesses he lists to support his claim to tell the naked truth, to not hold back any negative information about him. Those were the instructions I gave my mother when I applied for an annulment.

He needs to be brutally honest about himself, the relationship he had with his wife before getting married, the circumstances of the marriage, and what happened after getting married. He needs to be honest about his dating life before meeting her, and the dating life with her.

There is usually a deacon or other designated person to help him fill out the application.

The Church is looking to establish grounds to declare the marriage null. From what you have described, I think there is a very good chance the Church will grant the annulment, but only the Tribunal can make that decision.

P.S. If she had been diagnosed with a mental illness and did not reveal that to him before getting married, that itself, all by itself, is grounds for annulment.

Dear Jesus, if it be Your will, please help this man to obtain the annulment he needs in order to marry the OP. Please give both the OP and her boyfriend the grace to accept whatever the outcome of the annulment process might be with confidence as Your holy will, which is love and mercy itself. Great and glorious patriarch, St Joachim, and good St Anne, what joy is mine when I consider that you were chosen among all God’s holy ones to assist in the fulfillment of the mysteries of God, and to enrich our earth with the great Mother of God, Mary most holy.

By this singular privilege, you have become most powerful with both the Mother and her Son, so as to be able to obtain for us the graces that are needful to us.

With great confidence I have recourse to your mighty protection, and I commend to you all my needs, both spiritual and temporal, and those of my family.
Especially do I entrust to your keeping the particular favor that I desire and look for from your intercession.
