I, for one, thought Gibson went way overboard. Many other friends and colleagues, very devout Christians, were visibly offended by the film (not just the flogging scene.) It DID feel cult-like. However, I know others were very moved. Is it a matter of taste? I don’t know.
 
Brad Pitt is horrible. It’s because of his hatred of Christianity that I don’t watch very many of his movies. It needs to be a director I respect, great other cast, plot, cinematography etc. if it’s got him in it. I think my favorite movie he’s been in is…uh…True Romance?

Just because you have issues with the “people you grew up with” who called themselves Christians doesn’t invalidate the Lord, the saints, or his plan for you and the rest of humanity. And anyway, look at the news that just came out about his marriage – the original Mr. and Mrs. We Won’t Get Married Until Gays Can Get Married. Guess he’s going to blame God for that one too.

As far as The Passion of the Christ…I’ve seen it exactly twice, even though I own a copy, and the second time was the censored cut. It is a very rough film to watch; very violent and sad. It came out when I was 10 years old and going through Catechism; we were quizzed by the teacher whether or not we were going to be allowed to see it, and many of the kids said no, their parents wouldn’t let them. I definitely understand the squeamishness.

That being said, the reason Gibson made it so depressingly violent is BECAUSE he wants to see and feel just what God put Himself through, taking punishment for OUR sins because He loves us. The wages of sin was death before Christ was crucified. Gibson wanted to make people understand the issue that was central to our faith and our God. It did end up making Catholics out of many.

Terrible how far Gibson’s fallen, though. His best days are unquestionably over, and he most certainly doesn’t live his religion. He just got his new 34-years-his-junior girlfriend pregnant.
 
It amazes me how some people care what Brad Pitt or other celebrities think. Why would it matter to me what he thinks? And, in fact, sometimes, when an actor says something dumb, or inflammatory or disrespectful, I can no longer watch their movies. Since I never got what the “bid deal” over Brad Pitt is, I was never really a fan anyway.
 
Sounds like he is a pretty hurt guy. With news of his wife filing for divorce, and the rumors of his alcohol and drug use, I’m not surprised to hear his comments.

From other interviews it sounds like his upbringing may have presented the Christian faith in a less than positive light. That mixed with the anti-Christian environment of the movie industry, it’s not too surprising he doesn’t have a high opinion of the faith.

I will keep praying for him.

Exactly. To me the movie could have been titled “How Brutal the Romans Were”. It’s not a religious movie at all unless you’re already a believing Christian.

For some strange reason, many people sit up and listen whenever a celebrity speaks their mind on something, just look at how people view Morgan Freeman! (he is up there with the President, the Pope, etc)!! LOL

These people are talented, they can act for the most part, but they are no different than anyone else. I think far too many people put them on too high a pedestal, mainly just because they see them in the media so frequently, the amount of money they have, etc.

I also think many people fail to recognize the ‘public image’ we get to see, is not who they really are in real life, everything they say, wear and do are all very scripted, thought out ahead of time by managers, agents, PR people, etc

It’s actually an allegory for how righteous Sedevacantists are persecuted for speaking “THE TRUTH”. 🙂

So some Christians are unsettled with a film that does justice to Christ’s suffering and death? Why should we care over some guys who are disillusioned?
 
Whatever else we may think. I believe that Jim Caveziel, who portrayed Christ, is a wonderful Christian. He has a Youtube video talking about the movie, and here is a cool interview. He was struck by lightning while making the movie, fainted during the scourging, dislocated his shoulder, and went through unbelievable difficulties. But he feels it was worth it.

Didn’t he say some years back that he’s probably 50% atheistic and 50% agnostic? Anyways, the guy’s an idiot when it comes to expressing his views on religion. It’s rare to have someone who plays pretend for a living say anything remotely thoughtful.
 
Um, does anyone on CAF remember The Passion of the Christ being parodied on The Simpsons?
