My wife is in her 23rd week of pregnancy. We are currently trying to decide on the best childbirth class (Bradley, Lamaze, ect.). I was hoping those in this forum could provide me with their own experiences and recommendations. Thanks!

BRADLEY!!!

Here’s my story: My sister was an unwed mother. I was her labor coach in 2001. We took Lamaze. It was a nice and informative class. I learned a lot about the birth process and the drugs used. We learned some breathing techniques. When my sister went into labor it was all useless. She had wanted a drug free labor, but ended up taking narcotics.
When I became pregnant, my husband and I took a Bradley class. It was amazing. Not only did we learn alot about the birth process, we also learned very useful relaxation and pain management techiniques. We were taught many different birthing positions and labor techniques. We also learned about breastfeeding and pregnancy diet and exercise. Not only how to have a healthy and safe birth, but also a healthy and safe and full term pregnancy. Also my husband felt VERY involved. The method is from the Institute of Husband-coached child birth. There is a very strong emphasis on the father being involved in the pregnancy, birth and after birth. Unfortunatly, my water broke without any contractions, after five hours they had to give me a fast drip pitocin to induce my labor. My doctor kept offering me narcotics and an epidural because she said NO one can have an induced labor with out medication. Well, I DID! My son was born very alert and ready to breastfeed. His apgar was an 8/9 (that’s very high) even though there was merconium in my fluid. And one of the best parts is I remember having my son. I wasn’t grogy or “out-of-it”.
I believe that my son was so alret and healthy and that our breastfeeding had such a great start because I had a drug free labor and a healthy pregnancy. And I thank Bradley method and God for both. (And again, my husband loved it because he got to be an important part of the whole process.) And if you are looking for a drug-free birth, Bradley has the highest success rate (it’s like 80%, I don’t remeber exactly).

Whatever method you chose, I pray you have a great birth experience. Congratulations on your baby.

Congratulations!!!

My husband and I took a quick one day Lamaze class and there was no way I was going to have him puffing at my side!! It turned out that prayerful, rythmic breathing worked for me. I delivered without medication and without the saints and angels interceding and the power of God, I couldn’t have done it! I had a BIG boy! 🙂

You may find that all the “training” goes out the window the first time your wife delivers. I can’t wait to have the next baby because I will actually know what to expect!!

God Bless you all!!

Lilder – I did it to! My contractions started at five days past due date and then stopped. I was dilated and effaced and all those things I knew NOTHING about and needed a “giddy-up” of pitocin. No meds and my recovery was great.

How about none of the above? 🙂

I had all mine without any classes!

We have just had our first baby and the only class we went to was the standard class offered by the hospital. It covered what is actually going to happen during the labour and birth, the kinds of things you can do to reduce pain, as well as the things that can go wrong.

They also told us that any breathing techniques you ‘learn’ before the labour will probably be useless when you go into labour. They pointed out that nobody needs to be taught how to breathe - you just figure it out on the spot when the pain comes.

It used to be fashionable to attend breathing classes but, according to the midwife running our antenatal class, it is no longer widely practised (at least in Australia) because people don’t need it.

I am such a wimp. The first thing that popped into my head is EPIDURAL! :rotfl:

My mom used to be a Bradley instructor, and both my sister and I are “Bradley brats”! I may be biased, but when/if I have children, I will definitely be attending Bradley classes! They really focus on healthy pregnancy & birth, and keeping the husband involved. I endorse the Bradley method 100%. 😃

A great thing about Bradley is they don’t do the anooying breathing thing. They also think you already know how to breath. And the hee-hee-ho can be dangerous if you over do it. Hyperventilation anyone?

Birth is a natural and wonderful process and you might not NEED a class…but I would suggest at least something. It will really help you be more prepared (although you can never be truly prepared, because it is God who will decide how it all comes out…sorry for the pun.) And the way Bradley classes are set, really helped my and my husband become closer. We had to set aside time for ourselves, together every day. It was great.

(So I sound like I’m trying to sell you something? Sorry, it was jsut so wonderful for us. I truly believe God led me to the class. And our instructor was a wonderful Christian that helped us incorporate prayers into our “personalized” plan.)

Congratulations!!!

Now, when the birth is within minutes of happening, grab your stomach leave the room as fast as you can with left hand on stomach and right hand over your mouth… "The beauty of birth,… yeah boy, … run and don’t stop… come back 1 hour later with flowers and a puppy dog look on your face…

nah, go in there and tough it out, because in this new melinnium, all the REAL fathers will have to deliver their own children…

Remember, What God said… Woman, you will bear your children while husband is in the waiting room…

just kidding…not…run like hell… 👍
