On Sunday I received the eucharist for the first time in 30 years. After I stepped away from our priest a woman was standing about eight feet away holding a cup. I wasn’t sure what to do there. I assume that was the wine. The person just in front of me ignored her, but as I passed the woman seemed to be asking me a question with her body language. I hesitated. She hesitated. I panicked and fled 😉 .

I know that I can receive one the same as the other, or both, but I don’t know how to do the cup part. Is she going to hand it to me? Is she going to say, “Blood of Christ” and wait for me to say, “Amen.” Does she pour it, do I take it from her hands?

Also, since the wafer is still in my mouth, should I wait until it is gone fully before drinking? Is it assumed that the cup will help wash down the wafer?

She will say, “Blood of Christ,” and you respond with
“Amen.” She will hand you the cup, and you take a sip.

She will wipe where you’ve sipped, and repeat the procedure for the next person.

I’ve usually begun to chew the host before I receive from the cup, so the wine actually makes it easier to swallow the host as it disolves in my mouth.

Also, if you have a cold, don’t receive from the cup.

You are supposed to swallow the Host before receiving the cup. If the line is short, it may be a little more difficult to swallow the Host so fast. Just so you know that when you receive the Host, you are receiving the whole Jesus-Body, Blood, Soul and Divinity.

The EMHC will say, “Blood of Christ” and you respond, “Amen”. He/she will hand you the cup. You take the cup and take a sip. Then gently hand it back to the EMHC.

Sometimes the EMHC may seem to be pleading with you to take the cup because he/she may have noticed that the line is getting shorter and there is still a lot of the Precious Blood in the cup. It is not really a good thing to have so much remaining in the cup.

You’ll find it to be very easy once you do it, but to be a little more confident about it, you may want to practice at home putting a bit of cracker in your mouth like the host would be, then taking a small sip from a cup. Also, find a seat where you’ll be able to observe the actions of those in the line ahead - maybe the 3rd or 4th row.

And to address what zab said, if you can swallow the host before you get to the cup, fine, but if not it’s not necessary.

Zab, I did know that. Is it not true of the Blood?
Yes, it is true of the Blood of Christ as well. But one is usually not to receive only of the Blood of Christ unless they have a physical ailment such as being allergic to wheat or something that prevents them from receiving the Host.

I think the reason that we were told to swallow the Host before receiving from the cup is so that people will not think that they must receive them together. In my opinion, it would be OK (just like intinction) so long as the person knows that Jesus is present wholely in the Host and in the Precious Blood.

I ended up at a different parish this AM for the Solemnity of Mary and took communion with the host and from the cup. No faux pas. No awkward pauses or half dances this time out.

Thanks. 😃

Today I am reflecting on Mary as my mother. The mother of the Church, I am in the Church, therefore she is my mother, too. I am adopted into Christ’s family. How strange it is that something that used to beset me brings me a measure of comfort now. It’s like the Eucharist itself. All my objections evaporated when I went to confession, it seems. Scales from the eyes, perhaps?

Mary, Mother of our living God, pray for us.

I am an EMHC at my parish, and if there is much Precious Blood left in the cup is no problem for me. I just get more of Our Lord at the end of Communion. That is what happened today at Mass and I truly needed Him today.

One consumes the Body, than drinks the Blood. The reception of Body and Blood (under the appearance of bread and wine) is to signify the reality of the Death and Resurrection of Jesus Christ, which we celebrate at Mass. 🙂

I don’t drink from the cup myself, because I cannot stand the taste of wine. But I know I receive Christ entirely in the bread, just as I would receive Him entirely in the bread and the wine - no more, no less. And I heard you have to swallow the bread, but I chew it because I fear it is too big for me to swallow; I don’t want to choke on Jesus and spit Him up - that would be sacrligious 😦

You may drink more of the the Precious Blood—But you do not receive more of our Lord for doing so.
