Is making a promise to God and then breaking it a mortal sin? It was not broken out of explicit disire to do so but out of reclesness.

It was just a promise that I actually did for myself. I was experiening a difficult period in which I coudn’t get myself to bed early to wake up and work next morning (I’m generally not good in time managment). I was quite depressed about it so I asked God to help me and I promised him that I woudn’t do it next day. But I did it. I think I didn’t realize it right away that I promised it to God but I think later on I realized it. I don’t remember exactly how it was. I just wanted to finish what I was doing but then ended up going to bed very late anyways because of my reclessness (I’ll just finish it…few more minutes…just few more minutes…uuups, it’s hour now).

I think I’m getting quite scruplous these days but that is not a good reason to start regarding mortal sins as venial sins.

So once again, is breaking a promise to God a mortal sin…a promose that is not a solemn vow? Though of course the thing is whether there is actually a big differnce between the two.

Thanks.

If it is not a solemn vow (ie regarding a serious oath on a serious issue) then it is not mortal to break it.

What you did couldnt really be considered a true oath/promise to God but none the less it is not a good idea to make promises like that off the cuff.
