Breviary?

I would like to purchase a breviary so i can do the liturgy of the hours at home. I happen to have an electronic version on my ipod but i find this application hard to use sometimes i would much rather have a book. The only problem is where do i get such a book? i checked borders and amazon the only thing i could find was an anglican one not sure if this is similar or what but since im catholic i would like a catholic one. Ive seen more then one person have these and they were not priests so i know it is possible for lay people to get such a book.
 
And in case you’re wondering, I think the main difference between the one- and four-volume sets is that the four-volume contains the Office of Readings, and it also repeats the antiphons and some prayers so there’s a little less page turning. Mind you, Christian Prayer includes the music for the hymns which I mostly make up if I’m unfamiliar with them 😛

I think the inclusion of the Office of Readings is really worth the investment, but you always have the option to buy the volumes as you need them - spreading the cost out over an entire year can help make it much more reasonable! Amazon doesn’t sell them individually, but the publisher does.
 
If you don’t know how to say the *Liturgy of the Hours *I would recommend that you purchase *Divine Office For Dodos *by Madeline Pecora Nugent to go along with your breviary. My one volume languished on my library shelf for a year until I discovered this book.

I am talking of the post Vatican II Liturgy of the Hours not the Latin Divine Office

I’ll echo the acquisition of the four-volume set, especially if you’re interested in praying the Divine Office.

And, at the rate ICEL moves, there won’t be a revision for some time! 😉

As for learning, I honestly swear by immersion to it, so I would say call your parish priest, and ask if you could say Evening Prayer with him, or see if there is a group at the church that prays the Hours. Plus, the priest is canonically bound to say it! 😉
 
For a traditional Breviary (this is a traditional forum after all), someone has scanned the Day Hours (nearly impossible to find used anywhere) into two paperback volumes and published it on lulu. This has all the hours except the office Matins. It has the Latin and the English. PDF download for free if you like. Link to Vol. 1

ive seen people have this bag and inside of the bag is the breviary. its a smaller book but it seems to have everything inside. do you know what im talking about?

I actually saw a Breviery (several) at my local Books A Million. Also check your yellow pages for a Catholic bookstore. 👍

If you do get the Liturgy of the Hours, make sure and get the guide or ordo that goes along with it. This small book is published annually and it makes navigating the Breviary much more easy. I was in a Religous Congregation for a while and it took a long time to get used to the Breviary, and that was doing it several times daily in community. So just be patient with yourself, you will get it down.

That guide really is invaluable! Although the four-volume set I was given came with the 2009 guide packed inside so if you go for that option, you might not need to order one…but hey, it couldn’t hurt to have a backup copy 😉
