Bridget, the lioness that grew a mane dies

She one day started to develop a partial mane, that sort of looked like a beard. That baffled to zoo keepers. She had had a litter of cubs, so her hormones seemed to be functional. It turns out she had a tumor on her adrenal gland causing a hormone disruption.

I hope perhaps studying this lion can lead to breakthrough in human endocrine issues.

Apparently, though, much less common. In the wild there a few maned lionesses, but the all have a similar genetic defect, and seem to be sterile.
