Two of my favorite television New York police detectives were Lennie Briscoe of Law & Order and Andy Sipowicz of NYPD Blue.
Why question to you good folks is - who was the better detective?

I never watched NYPD Blue. I did like the original Law and Order, and Lennie was a big reason why (Sam Waterston was annoying as heck and wanting to take everything to trial was grossly unrealistic). So Lennie gets my vote.

Well shoot, if we’re goaing outside of Law and Order and NYPD Blue, then I get to nominate Pete Malloy.
Lennie still wins (along with colleagues in the SVUniverse: Stabler, Munch, Tutuola), but outside that universe: Justified 's Raylan Givens

Sipowicz by far. He could beat a confession out of anyone.
I vote for Lennie for exactly the same reason - Andy depended too much on physicality to close cases, rather than solving cases.

After viewing a grossly mangled dead body of a young woman who apparently fell from a balcony six stories above, Detective Lennie Briscoe quickly quipped, “Wonder if her friends knew she was dropping by?”

As much as I liked Sipowicz, ya gotta love Lennie.

I read somewhere that most of the so-called wisecrackers made by Lennie Briscoe were ad-libbed by the actor, the late Jerry Orbach. I am sure if that is true or not.
