Brown Scapular question

I have a question about the brown scapular.
Does it have to be the Mount Carmel Scapular? I have a brown scapular of Our Lady of the Seven Sorrows. Will a person wearing this scapular obtain the benefits of the brown scapular of Mt. Carmel?

There are several types of scapulars - some are connected with certain types of indulgences, some with others.

The Catholic Encyclopedia has everything you ever wanted to know about the scapular.

Chris, thank you for your reply. I have clicked on the link you sent me and there is surely a lot to read there about the different scapulars. I was hoping for a more direct answer to my question because I had given a scapular of the Seven Sorrows to my mother who was a devout Catholic. She wore the scapular even when she was very, very ill she was adamant about never removing her scapular. I gave her that particular Scapular because she had seven children. She died two weeks ago, while wearing her scapular. I gave it to her thinking it would provide the indulgences of the Brown Scapular…not realizing that it was different.
All I want to know is…did I give my mother the wrong Scapular!! If I did, I am going to be heartbroken. I need to know if my mother has received the indulgences promised by our Blessed Mother. Please help me with this question…

I have been looking into the wonders of the brown scapular

First of all, if a Catholic chooses to wear the Brown Scapular, day in and day out, it should be an outward sign of his or her trust in the Blessed Virgin Mary. Such a one should be confident that Our Lady will use her powerful intercession with her Divine Son Jesus to obtain for him special graces to live a good Catholic life and remain in the state of grace. In fact, Pope Pius XII said that wearing the Brown Scapular should be an outward sign of one’s consecration to the Blessed Virgin Mary, indicating that the one wearing the Scapular has a childlike dependence upon the Blessed Virgin as a model of virtue and as an intercessor, trusting that she will obtain special graces for him to live a virtuous life and especially to avoid mortal sin.

Secondly, this promise means that at the hour of death, if we are wearing the Brown Scapular, our Blessed Mother will intercede with God to obtain the graces we need to remain in the state of grace in God’s friendship so that we can save our souls. Or, if we have the misfortune of being in the state of sin, she will intercede for us that we might receive the Holy Ghost and sanctifying grace back into our soul before we die. Perhaps she will obtain for us the grace to make a perfect act of contrition, or she may obtain from God’s Providence an arrangement such that a priest will come to hear our confession and perhaps even administer the sacrament of Extreme Unction before we die.

So Joan im very sure your mother wore her scapular with real faith and will have received the protection and benefits of the brown scapular. Are you sure the scapular you gave her was brown?then in that case it had to be Our Lady of Mounst Carmel Scapular if it was Our Lady of seven Sorrows Scapular it would have been black.

THE BLACK SCAPULAR OF THE 7 DOLOURS OF MARY (Servites Scapular)

“The Black Scapular of the Seven Dolors of Mary,” or “The Our Lady of Sorrows Scapular”. Our Lady appeared to seven rich and prominent citizens of Florence who decided to give up their worldly possessions and follow Christ, promising to honor His Mother in her sorrows.

Thus began the Servite Order. Mary gave them the Servite habit and said that “these garments shall be to you a perpetual memory of the sufferings of my heart.”

This is the more common Black Scapular. In other respects nothing is prescribed concerning this scapular, although it usually bears on the front portion (over the breast) an image of the Mother of Sorrows. This scapular must likewise be worn constantly, if one wishes to gain the indulgences of the confraternity.

Thank you so very much for your post. It has really helped. I wear the same scapular as the one I gave my mother. It is black and was blessed by the Pope as well as my mother’s priest. She prayed her Rosary at least once a day, she never removed her Scapular and truly believed, up until death, that Mary would lead her to Jesus. I posted here today because I was worried she wouldn’t receive protection because I may have given her the wrong one. My mother was very devout in her faith and prayed everyday and also read from her Queen of Apostles Prayerbook that I also gave her almost constantly throughout the day. Even while facing death, my wonderful mother was praying for the souls in Pergatory every day. When her priest came to visit just before her death, he saw the scapular and said to her, “You’re all set!” and that brought us enormous comfort. He also gave her the Last Rites of the Church which, I understand is now called Annointing of the Sick. My mother’s faith has moved me to return to the Church…she gave me her rosary before her death and I pray on it every night…as if to continue for her.
I believe my mother is in heaven. I believe she had seen the face of our Blessed Mother Mary. She saw the Angels coming for her. I believe it with all my heart.
Again, thank you. I have been grieving for my mother and live for the day when I WILL see her again in Heaven.

Anyway they had some blessed rosaries and brown scapulars, so I took one of each. Can I just wear the scapular? Ive read that they should be given to you and there is some form of presentational “rite”.

CONDITIONS AND RITUALS ATTACHED TO THE SCAPULAR

According to Church tradition, there are three conditions necessary to participate in this Privilege and share in the other spiritual benefits of the Scapular: wear the Brown Scapular, observe chastity according to your state in life, and pray the Rosary. In addition to the Sabbatine Privilege, enrollment in the Brown Scapular also makes a person part of the Carmelite family throughout the world. They therefore share in all of the prayers and good works of the Carmelite Orders. Participation in the Carmelite family also, of course, places you in a special relationship with the Carmelite saints, especially St. Elijah, St. Teresa of Avila, St. John of the Cross, St. Therese of Lisieux, and, most importantly, Our Lady of Mount Carmel.

In order to receive the spiritual blessings associated with the Scapular, it is necessary to be formally enrolled in the Brown Scapular by either a priest or a lay person who has been given this faculty. Once enrolled, the enrollment is for life and need not be repeated. Anyone, adult or infant, who has not previously been enrolled may be enrolled in the Brown Scapular.

Guard her from all harm and on that great day of resurrection and reward raise her up with all Your saints. Pardon her sins and give her eternal life in Your kingdom. I had an experience this morning that I would like to share with you…
I brought home a cedar chest that my mother left to me. I put it in the dining room and I placed her photo on top of the chest and went to bed. I lay in bed this morning wishing I had could sing a song to her but I have had a sore throat. My favourite line in the song is:
“I will see you in the light of a thousand suns.”
When it was time for me to get up and get ready for work, I went to pass thru the dining room on my way to the kitchen. As I entered my dining room a very bright light was shining in my eyes and I said to my husband, “Why did you turn on the light in the dining room?” He replied, “I didn’t turn the light on.” I took a second look and noticed the light was, indeed, not on. What I was seeing was the sunlight coming thru the livingroom window, passed thru the dining room and reflected off the silver frame which contained my mother’s photo!!! It was so bright, it actually hurt my eyes!! I fell to my knees and praised our Heavenly Father for this wonderful gift. My mother was letting me know that she is, in fact, basking in the light of our Blessed Mother and her Perfect Son!!
Again, thank you for your help and I hope that, in turn, you will receive a renewal of your own faith in the story I have just shared with you…
