I’m unsure if this is the right area to be posting this, so thank you in advance for your consideration. The Brown Scapular is a lifelong promise, and affiliated with the Carmelite Order, so I’m hoping “vocations” is an appropriate place to ask this.

Like many practical Catholics, I was invested in the Confraternity of the Brown Scapular at my First Holy Communion. Also, like many Catholics, I have failed at living up to the devotion in the years since.

My question is this:

Once enrolled/invested, is this enrollment life-long? In other words, if I have failed in living up to the requirements set forth, am I able to take them up in good faith on my own, or does re-enrollment/reinvestment exist (and is it beneficial and/or necessary)?

Thank you in advance for your time and attention to this matter.

Once you have been enrolled in the scapular, there’s nothing that would make you need to be re-enrolled. If you’ve fallen off from practicing the associated devotions but would like to get back to it, then all you have to do is take them up again.

If you do not remember if you have been enrolled should you seek re-enrollment?

The enrollment list is no longer kept. It is sufficient to be invested to be a member of the Confraternity.

what about if you have stopped wearing a scapular (red, brown, blue…) for a long period of time and you decide to give it another try. should you re-invest?
