The Brown Scapular is a wonderful devotion because it reminds one of the commitment to follow Christ and consecration to Mary. It is a devotional practice that involves forsaking sin and embracing Christ.
The Blessed Virgin said wearers of the Brown Scapular should:
- Wear the scapular continuously.
AND
- Observe chastity according to one’s state in life.
AND
- Do one or more of the following:
A. Recite the daily “Little Office of the Blessed Virgin”
B. Observe the fasts of the Church together with abstaining from meat on Wednesdays and Saturdays.
C. With permission of a Priest, to say five decades of Our Lady’s Most Holy Rosary.
D. With permission of a Priest to substitute some other good work.
There are many blessings involved in observing the Brown Scapular devotion, including shortened time in purgatory. Remember that this is private revelation and not infallible. But even Popes have spoken on the scapular, giving their blessing.
