Brown Scapular

So today I went to morning mass where the memorial of Our Lady of Mt. Carmel was celebrated and such… anyway Father blessed some scapulars for anyone who wanted one… but he said he wasn’t allowed to invest people with it because he wasn’t a carmalite…

Is this true?
and when he blesses them does he have to use a special blessing? because he just made up a prayer on the spot…

I my self also went to morning Mass for the Feast of Our Lady of Mt Carmel, at a Carmelite parish. But what happened with me was the opposite of what happened with you. I was invested but I don’t think that my scapular was blessed. I am assuming that the blessing of the scapular would be much like the blessing for a rosary? If so, then my scapular hasn’t been !

Does anyone know if someone that isn’t Catholic (yet?) can have one blessed? And what do you mean by “invested”? (someone sent me one with a rosary)

Here is one link to reliable information. And, yes, any priest can do the “Investiture Ceremony” Its short and prayerful. sistersofcarmel.com/brown-scapular-information.php

Remember this is a Sacramental so anyone can participate. Anyone can say the Rosary and anyone can wear the brown scapular. To obtain the Sabbatine priveledge you must be Invested, say the Rosary daily or the Little Office of the BVM daily and venerate the scapular daily.

From the official “The Scapular of Our Lady of Mount Carmel: Catechesis and Ritual”, which was published jointly by the Calced and Discalced Carmelites:

Who may invest people with the Brown Scapular of Our Lady of Mount Carmel?

According to the Rite for the Blessing of and Enrollment in the Scapular of the Blessed Virgin Mary of Mount Carmel, approved by the Holy See in 1996, any priest or deacon has the faculties for blessing the scapular. A person given authority to act in the name of the Order may receive people into the confraternity of the scapular. The official ritual provided by the Holy See makes no provision for someone other than a priest or deacon to bless the scapular.

Further on, in the text of the Rite it states:

Priests and deacons have the faculties for blessing Scapulars; other authorized persons may enroll the faithful.

Yes, you can wear a blessed Scapular even as a non-Catholic; just make sure you do it for the right reasons. A non-Catholic would not be allowed to be enrolled into the confraternity, though.

Congratulations on the scapular!!

Not all priests know that the investiture authority has been delegated! Not just for the brown, but I believe in general for the other scapulars too! Though I am sure priests of particular orders especially appreciate doing it.

Note: After enrollment future Scapulars need not be blessed.

A priest at a retreat I went to gave me some medal(not sure which it is) he told me was blessed and asked me to wear it. I wear it almost every day.

Yes, they are two separate things. While the Enrollment always includes the Blessing, the Blessing can be bestowed without Enrollment. Any of the ordained (i.e., Deacon, Priest, Bishop) can bless (blessings is part of their ministry), but only those duly authorized by the Carmelite Order (who could be a non-Carmelite) can enroll the faithful into the Confraternity.

Here are some “practical rules” from the Catechesis:

The Brown Scapular is not:

a. a magical charm to protect you;
b. an automatic guarantee of salvation;
c. an excuse for not living up to the demands of Christian life.

The Brown Scapular:

a. is a sign which has been approved by the Church for over seven centuries;
b. stands for the decision to follow Jesus, like Mary:

1) open to God and His will;
2) guided by faith, hope and love;
3) close to the needs of people;
4) praying at all times;
5) discovering God present in all that happens around us.​

Also, as wearing the Scapular (even without enrollment) associates an individual with the Carmelite family, one should study and try to practice Carmelite spirituality (especially in the examples of the Carmelite Saints).

Thank you for settling that. The Father who enrolled me was a little soft of ear and mouth … I must not have heard the blessing.

I’m not too sure if you or anyone is aware but The Sisters of Carmel from Colorado are not in full communion with Rome.
