Can anybody give me a basic overview of what this brown scapular thing is all about? I’ve heard it mentioned, but have no clue what it is. Thanks!

We have discussed this here several times recently. Do a quick search to turn up discussions with lots of links, advice, etc.

Basically, it is a private devotion, a reminder to the wearer of the beliefs you hold. It originated from a vision of Mary to a member of the Carmalite order (St Simon Stock). In the vision Mary said that those wearing the Carmalite habit (ie a brown scapular) would go to heaven. This was based on the virtue of their consecrated life–not a “get out of jail free” card. Those of us who wear it now, also take on certain devotional habits (like a daily rosary).

FYI,

Someone on CAF gave us link to this claim saying that the Nuns there were not in communion with the Church, and I would have to look for it again.

edited: I just sent an email to vocations@sistersofcarmel.com to verify.
I am confused by the reply by the sisters:
Thank you for your email. Regarding our position, **we are in communion with Rome **and are not in any way connected with the schismatic groups that are sede-vacantist, consecrate their own bishops and ordain their own priests. Neither are we connected with the Society of St. Pius X, whose status with Rome is questionable at this time. We are under no ecclesiastical censures or excommunication. However, our status with our local bishop is indeed irregular, currently with no formal approval. We await the results in our own diocese of the Holy Father’s recent motu proprio, which supports the more liberal use of the Latin Mass and Liturgy.
Our Carmel is well known to the Holy See and to the Ecclesia Dei Commission in particular. We enjoy the friendship and support of priests and bishops throughout the world. We are doing our best uncompromisingly, in very difficult times for the Church and in the world, to be all we can for God, consecrated to Him and to His Church.

We hope this information is of assistance.

God bless you,
The Carmelite Sisters
PS: I thought I could post it here. Am I wrong to post this E-mail on CAF?

Here is a good website with both information AND Scapulars for sale. I bought my Brown, Green, and five-fold from them, as well as three cords:thumbsup:

Be sure to read the FAQ:yup:

Here is why I wore the Brown Scapular even before my confirmation. From the FAQ…

I’m not Catholic but I want to wear the Scapular, what if I can’t get to a priest to enroll me?

Our answer is put it on anyway and wear it faithfully, try to get to a priest to enroll you if you can. Otherwise we leave you in the hands of the Blessed Mother and Jesus, they often work miracles as we have seen so many times with the Scapular.

…weird. Sounds like they may be pushing the limits toward the rad-trads, but that they are in full communion.

So anyone who prefers the extraordinary form is a rad-trad?
I don’t think that is a charitable way of looking at things.
