Resonates in experience certainly.

But God has no need for the belief of people who treat him like an agony aunt and ditch him when things are comfy.

If anything that just highlights the deprived pursuit of self gratification now so abundantly prevalent in society.

You are correct it will not change but within the circles you describe, they shouldn’t need to be moved by disaster or misery. They should be moved by the fact, as per your example, that they are in fact ‘missing’ something.

Comfort in material satiety, is not all there is. Yet ignorance is bliss now, for many. On that I agree.
 
To be fair some will seek God as an agony aunt but stay because they have built a relationship.
 
I think it helps if the people in the church are welcoming and friendly, if they see you outside of a Sunday and still are welcoming and friendly. It is that building a relationship, not just with God but with people too that will keep people in churches. Some people may return to a particular church because they have made friends there.
