Hi,

I want to learn your opinions about this.
A Catholic dies in a muslim country and he has no relatives around and the people who finds his body has no information about him, even no name is found, they automatically think he is a muslim and they want to bury him in an islamic way. Our man was a very devoted Catholic and he is now buried with Islamic rituals and in a muslim graveyard.
Yes what do you think about this, it is not a far possibility.

Well, being that the Muslim God is the same God of the Judeo-Christian tradition, then I’m sure it wasn’t offensive to God.

At least it is comforting to know that they had reverence for his remains and treated it with respect instead of disregarding it. It is a Catholic Corporal Work of Mercy to bury the dead.

You can always hold a Catholic funeral for him without the body, or have the body transported back to his home country and have a service then.

You think it matters? Burial is more for the living than for the dead, I think - the dead need our prayers - no matter how one was burried.

yes, and those who found his nameless body did an act of charity, what is even described in the Christian gospel as an act of mercy, in burying the dead. that is my opinion. do you think it will matter on the last day of resurrection from the dead where his body is?

What a beautiful act it is to find a stranger and give him a respectful burial.

And to paraphrase St. Monica: “Bury me anywhere, God will find me”.👍

They didn’t know who he was, and they did their best by him. I find that a comfort, and a cautionary tale for people to carry ID that not only states who they are and where they are from, but their religious preference.

That doesn’t mean he isn’t entitled to be removed from the Muslim cemetery if possible and given a Catholic burial. That doesn’t mean he can’t have a funeral or memorial Mass, more Masses said for his soul, and prayers.

I’m sorry for your loss, if this is not a supposed situation.

I would think the crucifix around his neck or his scapular would tell them that he is Christian. Or the rosary in his pocket.

No there will be none. When there is one to be found, there are laws in Islam for those to be buried for example:
  1. It is not permitted to bury a Muslim in the graveyard of the non-Muslims, nor to bury a non-Muslim in the graveyard of the Muslims.

I liked these liberal thinkings but I don’t think that people would see the situation similar as you do perhaps in the middle ages.

I know such an example in the country where I live. A Christian was murdered because of being a missionary. His family was muslim and the father wanted to make a muslim funeral and bury him that way and no muslim imam was against that and that poor person was buried that way.

I believe in that God will understand every case as a perfect judge and every situation will be dealt strictly because we can just think about very limited number of possibilities and He knows all.

If you actually know anybody this happened to, you should have the Eucharistic Sacrifice offered for the repose of his/her soul.

And you should recite the Office of the Dead for him.

Thank you, this is really good to know. I will also speak with the Priest today.

I spoke with my Priest today, he smiled at me and told me this: It is more important what a person does in lifetime

His family was muslim and the father wanted to make a muslim funeral and bury him that way and no muslim imam was against that and that poor person was buried that way. The difference in what you first said, is that the real person WAS known to be Christian and his family ignored it. That is way, way different than finding a person unknown lying dead in the street and trying to do their best by him.

I believe in that God will understand every case as a perfect judge and every situation will be dealt strictly because we can just think about very limited number of possibilities and He knows all. And this man can still have a Memorial Mass, the Office of the Dead, and prayers for his soul. God is not limited by time and space, and certainly not by Muslim graveyards.

Exactly, I gave 2 different examples but with same ending with a non-Christian burial.

In the first example there is not such a possibility to make an Office for the Death because he has no one but he is a Catholic. One one knows him to make a Mess for him.
