What is the name of the incense that is burned in mass? And is it OK to burn it at home or other places? Would this be a bad thing to do (spiritually)? I really enjoy the smell of the smoke and I was thinking about getting some to burn while I work at home. Is this a good idea?

Mostly frankincense. You can buy it online. It’s not strictly for church use. A little goes a long way though. Make sure no one around you is allergic.

I see. Thank you for the info!! And yes I’ll make sure no one is allergic!

Many hippie shops sell all kinds of incense of various aromas. I used to burn the stuff also because I liked the smell.

Just be careful because a main reason that people have burned incense at home outside of religious ritual is to mask/ kill the smell of marijuana. Some folks will assume you smoke pot if you burn it at home in a non-religious way. I have never smoked pot in my life and had to deal with such assumptions when I put a little incense on to make the room smell nice.

Is there more to it than putting it in the burner and lighting it?

No. incense is dried tree sap, and holding a match to it simply wont light it. you’ll want to get charcoal (preferably designed for incense, easily found online) light that, and then spoon incense atop of it. As always, be careful- if you have small chldren or pets, place this where they cannot get to it.

I would avoid the ‘hippie’ shops and incense sticks that are made with unknown materials, those are what caused breathing problems and indoor pollution. Incense from reputable Catholic or Orthodox stores are using pure resins that have been used for thousands of years to purify the air inside and actually beneficial. Maximilian75 posted a good source. I have been in their stores.

In addition to the possible health risks of those hippie shops, would say that the new age implications of many of those incenses should be kept away from. Use good, Catholic stuff.

There isn’t just one incense used in church. I had a friend who said the priest at her parish brought samples of several different blends that he liked to the church and allowed the altar servers to choose the kind they liked the best. Different producers make up different blends.

I’m not recommending a supplier, but this web page gives good examples of what I mean:

I have read ,they use, dried flowers used in the worshiping of idols in temples, and where collected and made incense sticks ,strong chemicals and all are covered up by the sweet fragrance it emanates. we should be careful spiritually as well as ,physically if any one has asthma, bronchitis and other breathing problems.

@CharlesFulkerson Thanks for posting,it made realize,i use to burn it at home but forgot it altogether,to lazy i guess,if you ask for christian incense any store who has it would advice you,If is spiritually very good to do it everyday before or after family prayers if you has the time and patience or at least once in a week.say a I believe,or St Michael prayer while putting the incense in all the rooms God Bless

Tobit 8:2 Then Tobias remembered the words of Raphael, and he took the fish’s liver and heart out of the bag where he had them and put them on the embers of the incense. 3 The odor of the fish so repelled the demon that he fled to the remotest parts of Egypt. But Raphael followed him, and at once bound him there hand and foot.Tobit 12:12 So now when you and Sarah prayed, it was I who brought and read the record of your prayer before the glory of the Lord, and likewise whenever you would bury the dead. 14 I was sent to you to test you. And at the same time God sent me to heal you and Sarah your daughter-in-law. 15 I am Raphael, one of the seven angels who stand ready and enter before the glory of the Lord.”

The smoke of burning incense is interpreted by both the Western Catholic and Eastern Christian churches as a symbol of the prayer of the faithful rising to heaven. This symbolism is seen in Psalm 141 (140), verse 2: “Let my prayer be directed as incense in thy sight: the lifting up of my hands, as evening sacrifice.”

Holy Smokes: Why Catholics Use Incense in Worship,

At Mass and other liturgical services we see priests and altar servers swinging censers, sending clouds of incense wafting through the air. In Catholic liturgy, everything symbolizes a theological truth.

So, what does incense symbolize?

Incense has been used in Christian liturgy from its earliest centuries. In fact, it was a part of the Jewish tradition that came before it, a use that was commanded by God himself and recorded in Sacred Scripture.

Type of Incense used at Mass? Liturgy and Sacraments
Hi everyone, My brother is in Iraq for a visit (he’s working in a near-by country), and he found a market where they are selling incense. Does anyone know the exact type of incense used in Catholic Masses? Any help would be appreciated.
