Burning the Qu'ran: A Muslim Responds

In an opinion piece in the Washington Post concerning the church in Florida that plans to burn the Qu’ran, Muqtedar Khan, and associate professor someplace writes the following:

“I have been agonizing over this since I heard about it. My feelings are mixed. Sometimes I feel dismayed at having to suffer this. At other times I feel betrayed, for I think Muslims may have invited this through their own hateful zealotry. In the past few years alone so many churches have been desecrated in the Muslim World, many missionaries were murdered, nuns stabbed to death and the worst of all, the 1500 year old Buddhas of Bamiyan were intentionally dynamited. It was an ugly blow against not just religion, but also a major landmark of human history. Did you catch that?

The worst act of Muslim violence that Khan can name is the dynamiting of a bunch of statues of Buddha. That’s worse than the murder of Christian missionaries or the deaths of nuns by stabbing.

Human life means little to these people. Does anyone still believe that Islam is a religion of peace for anyone except Muslims?

I tried to get through the article, but I couldn’t listen to how the Qu’ran is the only book that is solely the word of God (um, hello, Bible anyone), but also that “No matter how ugly the act the Constitution permits this, is not an acceptable excuse. The Constitution does not permit this. The Constitution forbids cruel and unusual punishment. For Muslims this is worse than torture.”

Would I be upset if someone were burning the Bible? Possibly. But I certainly don’t believe that God is the physical book. There seems to be a lot of idolatry going on here. And protestants think Catholics are bad.

Good point about idolatry.
I’m always puzzled by the emotion attached to a book. It’'s not like desecrating the Blessed Sacrament or anything.
I’m also puzzled by the Muslim attachment to Mohamed. They only call him a prophet. He is not considered to be God. They almost seem to worship him.
I wish there were some Muslims here on these forums, but I imagine that they stay away from us.

You are very right on all points. Just because we may not agree with them does not make it ok to burn something they think is holy.

They are not Christian, or American. So expecting them to behave like both or either is irrelevant. They are not American, they are not Christian. They are what they are, and that’s how they act. Trying to expect them to behave as something they are not is an unfair comparision.

The point of my post is to point out that Khan believes that dynamiting a stone statue is worse than killing a human being.

Care to comment on that?
