I need some advice…

My husband’s company scheduled a very special dinner as a reward for his office for tomorrow night (he just found out–love the nice advanced notice! ). I had planned to attend Holy Thursday Mass with my 6 year old son at the same time as this dinner. (We only have one usable vehicle right now, so he would have to come home to give me the car.) I do not know what to do–my poor dh is the only one in the entire office currently not planning to go (because of me), and I am not sure if this will be a mark against him. He is also very disappointed. What should I do?

Thanks so much for any ideas, and God bless you!

It is not a Holy Day of Obligation.

Personally, I would let my DH have the car and fulfill his work obligation, and I would attempt to find a ride to church with someone else-- or I’d go to the dinner with him.

Is there any way he could drop you off at church and pick you up later? Or you could get ride home from someone else? Even if its not a day of obligation, its silly to keep yourself and your child from God’s presence just because of some dinner.

No, unfortunately, he works too far to make all of those trips. Also, I do not know anyone else personally at my church, so asking for a ride is not an option. Thanks for the responses, though.

Call the church office and ask if there is anyone they know of who can give you a ride. Someone is bound to volunteer.

I agree that you should call the church and get a ride.

Why don’t you know anyone at your parish/ Are you new to the parish? This could be an opportunity to meet some fellow parishioners.

If you are not new, take this as a wake up call from the heavens to get involved in your parish. Active participation and involvement keeps a parish vibrant and strengthens the faith of all…

Also, try to attend the Good Friday Servicce as a family since your husband has other obligations.

And your husband should [respectfully] inform the company to be sensitive to families [advance notice for family arrangements, babysiiters, family planning stc] and to employees when scheduling events around religious holy days…they might not have considered Holy Week [Yom Kippur, or a host of other Christian, Muslim, Jewish, Hindu etc Holy Days] this year but couls be more sensitive in the future…

My son is having his confirmation/first communion during the Easter Vigil on Saturday. Naturally he will be involved in Good Friday services as well. Thankfully, his office is closed Friday so he has no work obligation conflicts. Would that more companies would follow that example! To me, when it comes right down to it, Easter is so much more important than Christmas (that’s a personal opinion, I’m not citing any kind of doctrine here!) and yet Easter is so often overlooked as a “holiday”. That’s too bad.

But anyway, back on topic, I agree that this is an opportunity to meet your fellow parishoners and an opportunity for THEM to assist. Call the parish office and ask for help. This way, you keep everyone where they feel called to be without a lot of extra driving and no missed work obligations. And perhaps next year your husband can schedule for Good Friday to be a vacation day?
