I really love and respect Jimmy Aking, yet in this case he is showing his human fallibility. Here are the canons and the facts of the matter (please read all of this post): …Jimmy is simply mistaken on this one. 🙂
Your answer does not adequately answer Jimmy’s assertions.

Did you read the linked page? You don’t seem to recognize the exhortation vs. obligation distinction.

Last time I checked Jimmy Akin was neither the Pope or a Bishop or a member of the Magesterium. You can either agree with his interpretation of things or not…

As far as I know he, Mr. Akin is not an official spokeman for the Church.
No, but he is a Cannon lawyer, so his job is the correct usage of the afformentioned Church authorities. What are your credentials that you so glibbly dismiss his legal reasoning?

Not every priest is up to snuff and fully informed , that’s always been the case.

Pray for the priest to give more accurate information.

Yes, I read it and I disagree with his assessment. The Universal Church retains the no meat rule, the U.S. Bishops acquired an exception, yet even the Bishops themselves state that we should do penance and that abstaining from meat is the preferred method. While it is true it is no longer a sin this country to not even do penance, if a Catholics “actually” follows the Church in this country and “actually” follows the Universal Church, then they cannot conclude anything other then they–at the very least–should be doing some form of Friday penance, if not then those Catholics care not what the Bishops say, nor do they care what the Universal Church dictates. Please carefully read my posts.

Nope - he said that individual confession was replaced completely by communal penance. I wish I could say otherwise 😦
Please pray for th at priest… and for another priest I know who told me a while ago that he does not believe in the existence – at all – of Purgatory. He could not have been more serious about that.

I’d talk to him about it, but I’m already on his “list” for asking him whether it was a permitted practice to have a lay person speak at Homily time about their interpretation of the Gospel.

I went to my first communal pennance last sat and I didn’t care for it much, but there was also regular time confession which is at a time that is inconvenient for me and I think we have the extra because of the advent season. All foour priests took a corner of the church and it was private enough but of course is unusual to be standing and face to face, but certainly went much faster. A good thing that came out of it and I know it was all for the glory of the Lord anyways, our CD was playing his organ and saw the whole thing and he seemed rather touched by it all as he is the kind that skidaddles out of the church like right quick, and he is not catholic and can’t understand the whole priest thing as he says. We had it just like someone said but there was a blesing at the end which only about 10 people waited for out of many and we waited because that is what I think father wanted us to do? It was kind of crowded and long but really only and hour but to some they may have been on their lunch or something. Return from the desert
We had a hymn at the beginning and the end

If discussing religion at work isn’t one of the cardinal sins, it probably ought to be 😛

I overheard one of my co-workers telling me when he was growing up in the '70s, his priest and catechists told him that individual confession to a priest was replaced by communal penance services. He also mentioned that the practice of abstaining from meat on Fridays outside of Lent was eliminated, and objected when I told him that it had to be replaced by some other form of penance. In both cases, his answer was, “well, that’s what my priest told me!”

How do you approach folks who use this line to justify practices that are contrary to the explicit teachings of the Church?
Well the next time you hear “well thats what my priest told me” tell him to find a FSSP priest. Thats what I would say, but then again, I use that as an answer to pretty much anything…

“Why do you Catholics worship Mary.”
“Go ask a FSSP priest.”

“Why doesnt the Church ordain women?”
“Go ask a FSSP priest.”

“Hi nice to meet you, whats your name?”
“Go find a FSSP priest.”:hmmm:

Just some more of that good ol’ Trad babbling…👍
Anyway the initial point is direct him to an orthodox and well learned priest. That should help him learn the real teachings of the Church.
