Buying a new Bible

I have a NAB bible which seems OK. and I also have a Catholic Livng Bible which I really dont like at all. It seems as if so much has been lost in the translation of this one. I would like to get a new Bible but I have no clue as to which one is the best translation. I went to the Catholic store, saw all the bibles and almost ran out the door out of confusion.

So any help would be appreciated.
 
Well, if you would like a Catholic one with a different style than the ones you have, I recommend the Douay-Rheims. It’s stylistically similar to the King James, but for (and by) Catholics; it’s a faithful translation of the Vulgate, which was St. Jerome’s faithful translation from ancient texts. (So it’s a bonus if you like Latin since it is quite close to the Vulgate text.)

Incidentally, it was translated in the 16somethings by the English college at Douai in France (forced to train abroad because of Queen Elizabeth.)

You can read it online at drbo.org to get the “flavor.” (Site editor’s not to my taste, but he (she? I forget) didn’t write the Bible.)

The only problem is it can be hard to come by. If you do a search, there are Catholic presses that publish nice leather copies for $50 or so. I have two, both gifts, so can’t help there. I have seen a paperback edition too.
