The Chinese government is communist. They control family size. Abortion, sterilization, and contraception has been reported (although the government seems to deny direct involvement). There is lack of religious freedom and freedom of speech.

I think the government and factory owners may view children as an obstacle to their use of women and men to work long hours in factories at low wages.

I am concerned that buying products made in China encourages and supports this anti-family and anti-life mentality. I am also concerned that we are supporting a communist government and even helping to fund their military.

This is my opinion only.

But, if there is an alternative to buying products made with “slave” labor and by children in unsafe conditions I believe that it is my duty to avoid being part of the exploiters.

I do not believe that buying “on the cheap” is ok if it makes others suffer.

I’m not American but isn’t (regrettably) abortion and contraception legal in the USA? Does that mean nobody should buy anything made in the USA?

Two differing things here.

Abortion and contraception is not forced in America. As a consumer I can choose not to purchase from some companies or items that are supported by these situations.

Abortion, contraception and child labor are forced on people in China by their government. You can’t pick and choose what you are supporting. So the situation is not the same.

I think our spending priorities can impact the culture of life positively or negatively in the USA also. If a person buys an item made in USA or other country even it costs more than a product made in China then we can send a message to both China and the USA. The message is that we value family life and don’t mind paying more to promote the culture of life. We should also seek to make it known that this is what we base our purchasing decisions on. Perhaps we might even make tougher decisions about whether we buy something at all. 0 dollars cost beats both made in China and made in USA. By seeking first the kingdom of heaven we may in fact benefit by learning to prirotize our purchases and think more clearly about our goals and whether somehting is really worth it.

This thread is intended to promote the culture of life in the USA as well as China. Part of my point is that we in the USA may be feeding into this anti-family culture buy putting a priority on price rather than impact on the culture.

I think what’s also interesting and even enjoyable is that we can learn to be creative and resourceful and make our own things.

In addition to moral purchasing decisions I think we need to directly teach the truth about Jesus and human life. I think Catholics and perhaps others that speak with or work with the Chinese government should directly inform the Chinese government that Jesus came to save and transform the human race, We should tell them that promoting a culture of immorality is a sin against God and continuing in this sin purposefully can result in loss of eternal salvation.

It seems that sometimes we are too indirect. Our mission is direct proclamation of the Gospel. China is not like America where the truth of the Gospel is more readily available (even if rejected by some here).

Here’s a funny story… I have a family member that works at NSA. He bought me a digital clock (from NSA’s gift shop) that says NSA on it. I looked under the bottom, and there was a sticker: “Made in China”.

I dont think anybody in the US would buy Chinese Apple pie, firearms or WMDs.

They are not communist, they’re facist pigs. They gave up on the core values of communism, such as equality and worker’s rights.

To me, China is dead. That anchient land, a place a myth, legend and untold courage, a nobal and great history, all means nothing now. Anybody in China right now, is already dead to me, not only have they turned away from their culture and history, they sold it out.

It’s also shamefull to see them destory the enviroment so, a place that was historicly a great forest or was a family farm, is now home to a corperate tower. The Three Gorges, one of the most wonderous places on earth, insperation for countless master peices of poetry, art and love, is destroyed for a dam.

China, it’s people, and anything that would come from it, is one of the many reasosn why I hope the world truely does end by 2012.

To say the least, I never purpsoly buy anything made in China.

We certainly should avoid supporting, to the best of our ability, the communist regime in China by buying their goods.

But, we also have to realize that much of the foreign aid the United States has given to poor countries has been tied to their accepting condoms, BCP’s, and abortion implements. The United States may historically be the largest exporter supporting the Culture of Death on the planet, and by tying it to food aid, etc, this has coerced those countries to accept it.

Not to mention the millions in direct cash aid that is given to Planned Parenthood.

I’m limiting my purchase of Chinese imports but its hard. Not only do they murder babies (especially girl babies) but the recent slaughter of 50,000 dogs by clubbing them to death was the last straw.

Who’s supporting China’s way of life and regine? Rich greedy Western businesspeople who find cheap Chinese labor/manufacturing. And we are the ones asking for cheap prices, driven by materialism. It’s a sad, sad situation, there’s probably no solution except to go back to a simpler way of living which is not possible these days since we all rely on electronics and technology.

I guess prayinig for the conversion of China is the only thing we can do.
