Hi šŸ™‚ hope this is the right place for this question…I figured if anyone on forums knows about orders in communion with the Church, it would be here…

I’m trying to find a brown scapular. My only option seems to be buying one online. I found some good places, but my family is skeptical about giving out our address to online stores. I thought of just renting a mailbox at the post office, but I don’t have the money right now. I decided to get a mail box and buy a scapular in a few months, when I’ve saved up for it and the shipping costs… it’s a great scapular, it has the St Benedict medal, and it’s well made šŸ™‚

but this might take several months…

Then, I found out that this Carmelite convent has a gift shop where they sell scapulars, made by the nuns: sistersofcarmel.org/
In itself, that’s awesome, and my family is alright with me giving my address to a monastery…but I heard somewhere before that this convent is not in communion with the Church… my question is, is that true?? are they schismatic, like SSPX?

if so…would it be wrong to buy a scapular from them? would the scapular still be valid? I’d still get invested into it by a validly ordained priest, at my parish.

what do you all think?

I was thinking of just wearing this scapular, and someday when I have the money or have moved out, I’ll get the one with the St Benedict medal that I really liked.

God bless

If you don’t want to buy from a schismatic group, you can buy from Leaflet Missal. I’ve been to their store many times. They are reliable and perfectly safe to buy religious goods from.

thanks, šŸ™‚ but my parents aren’t letting me give my address out to any online stores 😦 I think some of them look trustworthy, and I know people who’ve ordered from them, but my parents aren’t Catholic and I don’t want to worry them 🤷 that’s why I initially thought of getting a mailbox (a different address), cause then I can order anything I want  but I don’t have money yet…

they are oki though with me buying stuff from a monastery.

I found this monastery but I’m not sure if it’s schismatic…

do you think it would be alright to buy a scapular from a schismatic group? I mean,…would the scapular still ā€˜work’…? cause it’s not like I’m taking Communion with them?

Yes, it will still ā€˜work’, but it isn’t going to guarantee you salvation if you wear it, as some might have it. But the main thing about buying from such an order is that the funds will support their schismatic mission. That said, I’m not even sure if this particular group is schismatic. I don’t have time to look over the website, but I’m sure someone will come along who knows soon enough.

the Church teaching is that it is a sign of salvation, but if you’re about to die and you’re not in God’s grace, you’ll just lose the scapular somehow.

I was thinking of that too… but I don’t know if they have any ā€œagendaā€, I mean, they’re nuns and they make scapulars… it’s not like giving money to the abortion industry right? I’d have to think more about this…

yea, that’s the thing, I’m not sure either… all it says on their website, is they do the Latin Mass. But so do many other non - schismatic groups!! so that’s no indicator… it doesn’t look like they’re against the Pope or anything…

thanks šŸ™‚

Yeah, about the Scapular, some people seem to think that it for some reason promises that anyone who is wearing it when they die is assured of salvation, which is heresy 🤷
That said, if they are schismatic they do have an agenda, and it isn’t one you want to support. That said, some non-schismatic groups certainly do celebrate the Latin Mass, but if they reject the Church of today I could not buy anything from them, as I would be supporting them in doing so. ā€œWhoever rejects you, rejects Me.ā€

well Our Lady promised that anyone who is wearing it when they die will go to Heaven…and the Church has approved of her promise. šŸ™‚ but see, those who are not going to Heaven, they won’t be wearing the scapular when they die…they’ll lose it somehow. So the promise doesn’t go against the Church teaching on salvation šŸ™‚ we’re still saved the same way.

yea 😦 I tend to agree…

In thoroughly looking at both their website and their associated men’s site it appeared to me that they may very well not be in schism (or any sort of irregularity, for that matter). They’d showed appreciation to Bishops for confirming and providing the TLM because it is difficult to find such a Bishop (especially in the western part of the US), and who are apparently given orders/diocese by Rome. They are simply traditional Catholics (all of whom are not schismatic).

As far as your other question, sure that would be fine. I personally prefer having medals on mine also and they don’t cause any problems although the crucifix does cause a little discomfort in sleeping. You can ā€œoffer it upā€, however I don’t see anything wrong with the option you mentioned, either. (And no, you wouldn’t need to get more than the very first one blessed.)

There is nothing wrong with buying a scapular from the Sisters. Just make sure that you have it blessed by a priest when you receive it. If you’ve never been enrolled before, there is an enrollment prayer to be said by the priest before you put the scapular on.

Here is a website for you to look at. It’s a website where you can get a free scapular 😃 and the prayer, plus read about the history of the scapular:

freebrownscapular.com/

Have you tried looking at the Catholic Church gift shops for scapulars? That’s the only place I’ve bought mine.

God bless!

The Carmelite Nuns themselves are not a schismatic order, but a renegade order. They were not received into the diocese before beginning their convent. The order that helped them begin, the Servants of the Holy Family, are a schismatic order. The bishops that they mention on their website are from other dioceses and have no jurisdiction within the diocese of Colorado Springs. The Servants and Carmelite Nuns have no formal standing in the diocese. I have heard that the nuns are in talks to be received into the diocese, but nothing’s been decided yet, sadly. 😦

If anyone has any questions, it would be a good idea to call the Colorado Springs, CO diocesan office. They have the most current status. šŸ˜‰ God bless!

I will note that FreeBrownScapular.com is not the only website giving away free brown scapulars. There are also sites giving away green scapulars and miraculous medals, and probably other things. I got some of all of the above that way.

thanks for the info everyone! šŸ™‚

(I’m Monica4316, I just made a new account cause I wanted to change my name, and this is the only way to do it…lol :o )
