What are the names, in English, of all the liturgical books required to celebrate the Divine Liturgy in the Byzantine Rite of the Eastern Catholic churches? What parts of the Divine Liturgy does each book contain?

If the same books are not used throughout the Byzantine Rite but vary from church to church please say, and in a post I will re-phrase my question.

If you’re looking for the complete books, you’d need the text of the Divine Liturgy itself, the volumes of the Eight Tones (vary between a 4 or an 8 volume set), the Menaion (12 volume set of feast days for each month of the year), the Lenten Triodion (number of volumes vary), the Pentecostarion (number of volumes vary), and possibly the books for Holy Week if the texts aren’t included in your edition of the Triodion. Then you’d need a copy of your church sui iuris’ Typikon so that you can determine which books and which texts you should be using any given Sunday.

The same books are used throughout the Byzantine Rite, but the translation of the texts may/will vary from church sui iuris to church sui iuris.

I don’t know. Are the liturgical books different for different sui iuris Eastern Catholic churches that use the Byzantine Rite? Are they different depending on the language?

Thank you. I’m not an Eastern Catholic. I’m a Latin Catholic. I asked because I’m interested. I know there are different rites depending on the Eastern church sui iuris, and so I specifically asked about those that use the Byzantine Rite. I understand from your answer that the liturgical books are the same for the Byzantine Rite whichever sui iuris church it may be; although, there may be differences in translations and in the Typikon.

I do not know what all the liturgical books are that you name but having there name gives me a start. I can now look into them. Thanks!

Start by looking at the Liturgical books available through the Melkite Greek Catholic Eparchy of Newton:
https://melkite.org/products-page

They have the Menaion, the Octoechos, the Lenten Triodion (and two separate volumes for Holy Week), and the Pentecostarion. You can ignore the Horologion unless you’re also interested in the Byzantine Liturgy of the Hours.

I know these names are all confusing because they’re in Greek, but there’s no English translation for the titles that I know of.

You understand correctly that the liturgical books are the same for the Byzantine Rite regardless of church sui iuris, although translations may/will differ, and there are sometimes other minor differences in content and, of course, in the Typikon.

Thanks for the link, it’s much appreciated. I will start from there.

I’m afraid my Greek is very poor. I also doubt that the Greek prefixes and suffixes I know for teaching Biology won’t help with liturgical terminology.
