Glory to Jesus Christ!

I know a Divine Liturgy is usually not a posted event, but we’ve only had one Greek Catholic DL in the state per year for the last three years.

We are celebrating the Feast of the Transfiguration of Our Lord on Thursday, August 6th at 7PM at St Joseph Roman Catholic Church in West Liberty, IA.

If you know anyone in Eastern Iowa or northwestern Illinois, pass on the info. You can also visit the Byzantine Catholic Outreach’s web site at www.eceia.org

Glory to Him forever!

Don’t worry about it. Yours is a yearly thing, so it is important to get the word out.

As an aside, I regularly post notices on my Facebook page regarding our local Byzatine (Ruthenian) Catholic Divine Liturgy (first, third & fifth Sunday of the month, except as noted in the bulletin and/or announced), especially those on the major feasts, as well as announcements pertaining to Liturgy of the Presanctified Gifts (Great and Holy Lent) and the like.

I do have a question on your Eastern Catholic outreach, though.

You said you have Greek Catholic Divine Liturgy once per year? Do you rotate with other Catholic churches (Maronite, Armenian, etc.) on the type of liturgy that is offered each month? Or how often do you come together to pray and worship?

Thus far, we are just Byzantine. We have Typika every week, and hope DL will be more frequent soon. We also have Reader’s Vespers in a parishoner’s home every other week or so. I have two objectives: to establish Greek Catholic communities throughout the state, and to help other Eastern Christians get their own communities together.

To the first end: all we have at the moment are Greek Catholics. If we can get a stable and permament church going, we will be better positioned to get GC communities going elsewhere. We have folks coming from a geographic area of about 3500 square miles-basically Cedar Rapids to Illinois, Dubuque to Burlington. There are other in Des Moines and the very western reaches of the state.

To the second end: the area is diversifying-there are Indians here (some of whom are Christian, but I do not know what denomination), Eqyptians (Coptic Orthodox, they have a Liturgy once a month, I think). We were told by the RC Diocese to be aware that there may be an influx of Middle Easterners, but we have not seen that as yet.

In Christ,
Adam

We have members in Iowa registered to our Chicago parish, they attend RC on a typical Sunday and attend in Chicago whenever possible.

Interesting. I wonder whereabouts they are from. Saint Ambrose in Davenport had a bi-ritual Indian priest (I don’t know if he was Malabar or Malankar) as a grad student, but he is not there now. There is a Friends of India chapter in Cedar Rapids. I really should work harder to get to their India Day celebration.

I am from Davenport, originally, (though I have spent most of my life in Dixie), I am VERY happy to see this. We have a Melkite community in Augusta, beautiful church and wonderfully friendly Parish, they are like a second home to me. God bless!

It was wonderful! We had 45 (32 from the Outreach, and 13 guests). Because we had a chrismation, the Liturgy lasted 2 hours. The celebrant was able to stay through the weekend, and so we got two DLs. It was awesome!

Was there a baptism with the chrismation, or was it chrismation only?

Also, does your priest serve another Byzantine community, thus being able to serve you only occasionally? Or is he bi-ritual? I am just curious.

The child was baptized in the hospital, so this was chrismation. Our administrator’s parish is 350 miles away, in Indianapolis. He is Byzcath, not bi-ritual. None of the potential leads for bi-ritual help have panned out.

He is Byzcath,
Not meaning to make fun of your post or anything, but I feel I need to say something because this could be misleading: when people say “Byzcath” they usually mean a website. So I would argue that your statement is kind of like saying “So and so is CA” instead of “So and so is Catholic”. 😉

My apologies for the short hand. I use it the same way the ByzCath forum uses it, as shorthand for “Byzantine Catholic,” but not really thinking of associating it strictly with the other site. I thought of using BC, but that may indicate some sort of time anomaly…I really should have spelled it out…

Fair enough. 🙂

Anyhow, I guess I should have said, not

but rather that it’s like saying “I’ll give you Catholic Answers” in place of “I’ll give you the Catholic answers”. 😃
