Just to throw a positive bone to those of you having your firsts,
I had three natural unmedicated births. Two of them at home. You hear a lot of the “bad” stories, take time to listen to the good ones! There are many out there.
Birthing is hard, and parts of it are painful, but it is something I wouldn’t give back for anything in the world.

Labor hurts. Period.

Everyone has different pain levels and every baby is different.

Knowledge of what’s going on and confidence in those around you and your ability to speak up for yourself, will lessen the emotional contribution to pain.

No matter what you think now, don’t think you’re not allowed to change your mind when the time comes and don’t feel bad about it afterwards either. A plan is one thing and a good thing, but life in the moment of the experience is the reality you’ll be dealing with.

Some of my babies were literally no big deal and I didn’t even think about pain meds. Some I screamed at the top of my lungs and the dr. wanted pain meds.🙂 Some I had epidurals, some staydol, some it went too fast to do anythng at all - including pushing or having the dr. there.

But they are all arrived safe and sound and I’ve survived to tell the tale. Even more, I’m willing to do it again - which really says it all.

Thanks, Rob’s Wife. I’m trying not to worry or feel guilty about my decidion to have an epidural. Who knows, maybe I’ll get in the thick of labor and it won’t be as bad as I am anticipating and I won’t feel the need for one. But you’re right - every baby is different, every labor is different, and every woman is different. I plan to do the relaxation techniques I learned, but I have a feeling I’ll need both those and the pain meds.

Labor was sooo exciting for me! Maybe it is because I was only in labor for about 5 hours before the doc stopped it and said I needed a c-section. I was very disappointed, although I knew it was comming.

I healed very easily from the c-section. I was up walking around just hours after birth. The nurse came in my room and found me up and about with my baby. She was very suprised to see me out of bed. Sure it hurt, but I wanted to be the one to care for my baby. I didn’t want to watch the nurse do it.
