Is it morally acceptable to subscribe to services (for moral uses) from a cable company that carries many channels of pornography and other immoral content? As you may know, cable companies carry these kinds of content.

I had once read Catholic material (I think by a priest) that indicated that we don’t want to be part of funding the promotion of such materials. It was referring to pornographic magazine publishers.

It seems that Catholics have to make all kinds of compromises to participate in American society today.

How about if I ask: do you subscribe to cable (TV/Internet/Phone) and if so, did you have this same question?

(By the way, we subscribe to all three services with our cable company).

I subscribe to cable and have no qualms about it. After all, if we stopped using anything that can be, or has been, used for evil, then we’d never leave our homes…which can also be used for evil.

OK - thank you. I think the real problem is that we Catholics need to become more involved in technology and media to promote the teachings and morality of Jesus. I think Catholic universities woud do well to focus on more engineering and technology.

Maybe the answer is to accept but also be aware that our goal as Catholics is to transform society so I don’t think we can really be 100% comfortable about these things. I.e. these ills of society should be thorns that motivate us. When there are a multitude of pornography channels on cable - it’s a clear sign that something is seriously wrong with our society. St. Paul says not to be overcome by evil but to overcome evil with good. I think we need to be praying and working to change these situations.

If you look at society, media, and “culture” today - it is clear that we Catholics have much work to do.

To clarify, the question isn’t about using things that can also be used wrongly, rather it is about helping to fund the activity.

As an analogy, suppose a drug dealer also sold food. Would you buy milk from a drug dealer? Granted, you’re not buying the drugs but you’re helping the drug dealer keep his general enterprises going.

Cable companies are massively high volume pushers of pornography and spread it across the nation.

That’s true. But there is far more porn available on the Internet than on cable. And as many have noted on this forum, it can be as addictive and as destructive as crack cocaine.

it ain’t just porn the cable sells, it’s also violence, greed, discriminantion to women & children, an such. An it’s time all cable places were shut down and burned down for godd and that the personnel changed into priests an nuns.

And don’t forget that awful EWTN channel thats carried by cable…

I like EWTN. Also, I don’t necessarily compare subscribing to cable to buying products from a drug dealer - I was making an analogy to illustrate the point.

Perhaps a Catholic cable company is a good idea. I would certainly plan to subscribe.

here is the best advice you can get…just buy the cable channels from the provider that you want and don’t buy the ones you don’t want. its that simple.

its not like porn channels are in the basic package  most specialty TV channels are additions that you pay for, like HBO or certain sports events

Yes, we have the basic package - there still seems to several free TV MA and PPV channels. However, I see your point that at least we’re not directly supporting the wrong channels exclusively.

I must admit, the family really likes the high-speed internet. We have also considered a new package from the phone company. Apparently they also have an Internet/TV/Phone bundle and it is less expensive than cable. The internet speed would probably not be as high though.

Thank You
