I do realize this is not solely a hub for intellectuals. Next off, if one cites sources their is no concern. Time to follow my own advice. In addition, I did the opposite of my username.

I have no idea what I am talking about. But sometimes I think I post good links… I think…
Except… sorry… my mild OCD? …. shouldn’t you have written “Next off, if one cites sources there is no concern.” I am not a native speaker and probably wrote a bunch a crap here on CAF, not worthy to correct, forgive me, but I simply could not just not saying something.

99% of the time, I don’t either. 🤷‍♀️ But I try to be helpful. And that is the sole reason why I stay out of the philosophy forum, until I made the mistake recently and blundered in because it didn’t occur to me to check which forum it was under, instead I was just reading the thread title. My bad. Still learning here. And boy, there are a whole lot of very well educated highly knowledgeable people here, from whom I learn.

I don’t even know what this post is about, I just have the theme from The Smurfs playing in my head.

To clarify all prior confusion. This post was a combination of 3 things in myself.
  1. Sudden inferiority concerns about my own skills which was partially negated by the next sentence.
  2. Concerns about myself taking a more combative approach in the world of apologetics. I always must ask if I am as humble as my username.
I worried to much. Anyhow, not to waste your time.

@BartholomewB And might that be because the lack of education, even if they have 10 doctorate degrees? People have a horror of debating civilly. I think we should always flag pornography, character attacks, hatred, blasphemy, and serious attacks against our priest. Also flag when people are off the topic. All that is needed is time and effort to start another thread, but that’s another topic. 😅 Otherwise why be afraid of discovering the truth, by researching to find out what our faith teaches us? Debates, without character assassination, are a learning experience.
Tragically our secular media seems to be at the four year age mark. Like a spoilt child who thinks with the mind of an angry, violent and hateful adult, but again that is another topic. 😲 Maybe one day some of those journalist, including NCR (national Catholic reporter from KC,MO.) will find their way back home.

In the Weekend FT, under the title, “Who speaks for the people?”, Simon Schama has a highly readable comment on the resurgence of demagogues and the threat (whether real or only apparent) that they pose to liberal institutions:

[Edit]
It seems to be behind a paywall, but you can read it by googling for Schama demagogues FT.

The article you have given to check out seems to misquote President Trump or at least take what he said out of context to the situation that was occurring after the elections. This is the link to the article you mentioned: https://finanz.dk/simon-schama-who-speaks-for-the-people/
The USA left England and its type of government for good reasons. Tragically we seem to be going the route of England and as we continue to destroy our Constitution by allowing, as the late Supreme Justice Scalia says by giving a “bunch of lawyers” the right to vote on things they haven’t a clue about — they aren’t medical doctores, scientist etc., but vote on moral issues like – when does life start – marriage between two of the same sex and God only know what they will do next, As judges continue to be given power they have no right too.
I do not understand what is going on in the UK regarding the European Union and that is my own fault for not reading more about; but I do know what is lacking in my nation and most likely in the UK is leadership. Not a demagogues but real leadership. Not a Hitler, but a person of integrity who practices what he preaches. We need witnesses not boring speeches.

Thanks for the link, but the sound isn’t working on my computer. Do you mean Trump never actually spoke those words, “I love the poorly educated”?

Schama is very knowledgeable, and he has the gift of writing very clearly, but he has the weakness – as I see it – that he sometimes seems to be exercising self-censorship to make sure he never accidentally expresses any views that are unfashionable among the progressive Left.

O yes he spoke those words but just look at the context – one can take it in different directions. Also I would have to read the article your gave by Schama a few times. The financial world is as far away from my ability to speak about as is China or Mars. Blessed day –

It’s the Weekend FT, a general interest section that comes with the Saturday issue. The daily FT, like the Wall Street Journal, covers business news very extensively, but the Weekend section is different.
