California Bans Tanning Beds for Teens, Abortions Still OK

In many States it is legal for a teacher to take a student out of school and drive her to the abortion clinic. But that same teacher can’t allow her to get on a school bus with the rest of her class to drive to a museum or band concert without a parent-signed permission trip.

No schools can give that girl an aspirin, and even when I went to school in the dark ages, the school nurse, a Registered Nurse, mind you, could not apply a bandaid to a wound, but could only hand it to the student to apply one handed.

Stupid laws will always be with us, and they aren’t unique to California.

This is a great law. There is no reason for kids to be engaged in this ridiculous behavior.

How dare parents expose their daughters to this well known cancer risk purely for vanity.

You mean they can’t do what the want to with their own body? Can’t even get around the tanning bed prohibition with parental consent or a judicial bypass? Well, at least they still have some freedom. They can get an abortion without parental consent.

I would agree with the poster’s indignation over the lack of parental notification over abortion.

But that has no bearing on the use of tanning beds. Early exposure to UV radiation significantly increases the risk of skin cancer later in life. I don’t see any harm in making kids wait until they are 18 years old, and may exercise somewhat better judgement than an adolescent might.

I agree. They aren’t mature enough yet to be using tanning beds or having sex.

By itself, it’s not a bad idea.

When compared to the laws on abortion, it does seem utterly ridiculous.
