No, these people need prayers.

It helps to remember that these people, like all of us, just want love and acceptance. Sadly, they have tendencies that direct them in a way other than what God had planned and the Devil and world tempt them to sin. It’s a terrible cross, especially because it deals with intimacy. And people acting like homosexuality (even without actions) is worse than anything, even worse than despair or of the taking of innocence or of life, really make it difficult and do not do a good job of exhibiting Christ’s love.

OK,this is painful, but I’m going to get personal. I have bisexual tendencies. I thought they went away, but they haven’t. It’s very difficult to have thoughts you don’t want, to try and live a good Christian life, and to be made to feel as a second-class Christian because you struggle with this. I’m not saying the Church says to treat them differently, but that’s the feeling I’ve gotten from quite a few Catholics and other Christians.

It’s hard enough when you have the Sacraments and prayer at your hands. It’s hard when you feel like, even though you want a heterosexual marriage and family, it’s not going to happen. Or, if you are still attracted to the opposite sex (and I am), you’re afraid that a potential future spouse will be repulsed if you tell them of these struggles. Or, if you desire a vocation to priesthood or religious life, but feel that you could never do it because either temptation would be too strong or they wouldn’t let you in any way. It’s tough when you feel you can’t be a real man or woman because you struggle with this (or because of the “gay men are girly, lesbian women are butch” stereotypes). It’s tough when others believe you to be promiscuous or full of STD’s because of something you can’t control anymore than the weather.

I can only imagine what it’s like when you don’t have God as your focal point. Not understanding why people are so angry and upset over something you do in private. Not understanding why people get up in arms over your decision to love someone (and yes, it’s done out of love and a desire for intimacy, even if it might be distorted). Simply wanting to be like everyone else, but knowing you can’t. It’s very tough and I think instead of wondering if God is punishing these people, we should pray for His love to touch them in a very deep and beautiful way, to let them know they can be free.

And onetime poster, I agree with you on the other issues:thumbsup: I’m conservative on a lot of things, but I rather like the idea of universal healthcare and things like that:)

hugs Thank you. This is what I would have said, if you hadn’t already said it for me. I am happily married. However, I struggle with same sex attractions as well. And I live in Massachusetts. God forbid. I will never, ever understand why homosexuality is singled out as somehow the worst sin in the world.

I used to live in the “gay culture.” I rejected the Church, and Christ in part because it felt like I had been rejected. I thought to myself that if the feelings didn’t go away, it must be because God didn’t want me. And you know what? It’s a lot “easier” to give in than to face your brokenness head on.

Don’t you understand that homosexuals are not coming from an evil place? Yes, homosexual actions are disordered.Yes, it will never make them truly happy. But generally, these attractions come from a place of very deep hurt. Is this how we treat people who are sick? Do we not realize that when we say and do things like this we are rejecting even those struggling with same sex attraction who are obeying Church teaching? They need our COMPASSION, not our CONDEMNATION.

We are ALL broken in many ways. It would help to remember that before we start assuming that God is “smiting” those who’s brokenness is more public than ours.

Yeah-huh, and Katrina hit the Gulf because this country tolerates gays.

We joining Westboro Baptist next?
I agree completely. I’m now picturing that Far Side cartoon with God at his computer, getting ready to press the SMITE key.

It’s called* faulty causal assumption*, folks.

And what about all those wildfires and forest fires that go on in California in years when nothing at all happens re: gay marriage in our state’s politics? Somehow I don’t think God is that absentminded.

And what about that tornado that hit the Boy Scout camp? Did God get annoyed with them for some reason?

Don’t let’s be silly!

With Sodom and Gomorrah, He punished the guilty only!..

actually I think He destroyed everything in those two cities with fire & brimstone.

Women & kids, cats & dogs as well as the offending males.

No, because Abraham pleaded for them and God said that if there were even only a few good people, He would spare the cities.

And Jesus said that the rain falls on the righteous as well as the sinners.

I think we’re called to love everyone, not speculate on whom God is smiting next.

From Genesis:
20
6 Then the LORD said: “The outcry against Sodom and Gomorrah is so great, and their sin so grave,
21
that I must go down and see whether or not their actions fully correspond to the cry against them that comes to me. I mean to find out.”
22
While the two men walked on farther toward Sodom, the LORD remained standing before Abraham.
23
Then Abraham drew nearer to him and said: "Will you sweep away the innocent with the guilty?
24
Suppose there were fifty innocent people in the city; would you wipe out the place, rather than spare it for the sake of the fifty innocent people within it?
25
Far be it from you to do such a thing, to make the innocent die with the guilty, so that the innocent and the guilty would be treated alike! Should not the judge of all the world act with justice?"
26
The LORD replied, “If I find fifty innocent people in the city of Sodom, I will spare the whole place for their sake.”
27
Abraham spoke up again: “See how I am presuming to speak to my Lord, though I am but dust and ashes!
28
What if there are five less than fifty innocent people? Will you destroy the whole city because of those five?” “I will not destroy it,” he answered, “if I find forty-five there.”
29
But Abraham persisted, saying, “What if only forty are found there?” He replied, “I will forebear doing it for the sake of the forty.”
30
Then he said, “Let not my Lord grow impatient if I go on. What if only thirty are found there?” He replied, “I will forebear doing it if I can find but thirty there.”
31
Still he went on, “Since I have thus dared to speak to my Lord, what if there are no more than twenty?” “I will not destroy it,” he answered, “for the sake of the twenty.”
32
But he still persisted: “Please, let not my Lord grow angry if I speak up this last time. What if there are at least ten there?” “For the sake of those ten,” he replied, "I will not destroy it."
God punished only the guilty. That is clear from the Bible.

I don’t know if any of the people who have made comments actually live in San Francisco – I do – and I am a native – born and raised in San Francisco. I must say that the city has changed drastically. The newspapers SHOVED information about the gay pride parade down our throats – you would think nothing else was happening anywhere in the world. The Castro District which used to be a middle class family neighborhood is totally different. They had to close the Catholic grammar school in the area – many of my long time friends actually went to the school many years ago – just thank Heaven you don’t live in San Francisco – it is a beautiful city but definitely different.
  • Several months ago I went downtown one Sunday and there was some kind of gay event going on -- they were all over themselves on the street cars -- I don't like to see heterosexuals act that way -- UGH!!!*

I believe that it is imperative that we get this information out to as many people as possible.
