Yeah, but do they really think that the church never bothered to deal with this, or the other ‘easy’ attacks on the church, over 2000 years? As if this one little point will suddenly unravel 2000 years of history.Like it or not, the reason the “call no man father” thread keeps reappearing is because there are a LOT of folks who believe this to be the smoking gun of anti-Catholicism.
Why do you call the one who sired you, father, pops, dad, daddy, papa, pa, etc etc etc?Hi everybody I just have a question, why if the bible says not to call any man father on earth but your Father in heaven, why do you guys call the preist father its against Gods word!![]()
Most significantly, the decline of “Father” in Protestantism coincides with the rise of Irish immigration to the United States in the 1840s. Before that time, Roman Catholic priests in America were usually addressed as “Mister,” for most were secular (nonmonastic) clergy with roots in Europe or England, where Roman Catholic practice restricted “Father” to priests of monastic orders. Secular priests were called “Mister,” “Monsieur,” “Don” or other vernacular equivalents.
Irish Roman Catholics, however, addressed all priests – whether secular or monastic – as “Father.” And by the end of the Victorian period, the Irish had influenced English-speaking Roman Catholicism to call every priest “Father.”
This change clearly influenced Protestant usage. Catholic priests called “Mister” and protestant clergy called “Father” had lived side by side in America. Following the Irish immigrations, however, Protestants began to see the title as redolent of priestcraft and popery.
Why do you just ask about priests? It doesn’t say “call no priest father”. It says “call no man father”. Can you honestly say that you call no man father (or any equivalent word)?Hi everybody I just have a question, why if the bible says not to call any man father on earth but your Father in heaven, why do you guys call the preist father its against Gods word!![]()
The emphasis on the literal (and banal) interpretation also loses Christ’s point—do not obey man over God. Men are creatures, God Creator. Men may (and often enough do) claim to speak for God, the proof is in whether action and word are consistent with prior revelation of God.Why do you just ask about priests? Very well said! The emphasis on the literal (and banal) interpretation also loses Christ’s point—do not obey man over God. Men are creatures, God Creator. Men may (and often enough do) claim to speak for God, the proof is in whether action and word are consistent with prior revelation of God.
What many anti-Catholics miss is that this is much more an indictment of non-Catholic communities than our own, as apostolic suggestion, the Magisterium, and Scripture are in harmony within the Catholic Church alone.
It is when a man claims to speak with Christ’s mouth, utters things which have no precedent (and which sound not at all like what Christ did say), and urges others to leave the Church that this point is most clear.
It is not the faithful priest Christ was warning us about, but the heretic and the Pharisee and all those who claim to speak for God, yet seek not His will to do.
Too late, I have already branded you a heretic!Of course, I meant “apostolic succession”, not “apostolic suggestion”—hope I haven’t become an accidental heretic!![]()
Darn—I don’t have time to be a heretic!Too late, I have already branded you a heretic!![]()
Darn—I don’t have time to be a heretic!
Do you know how long it takes to whittle down Scripture, create alternate creeds, design a brand new liturgy, PLUS take over a few countries?
I renounce my heresy!
