I’m hooked! on Season 3…watching on Netflix now.
although it is a PBS series , they are currently airing I believe Season 8 or 9
If you like nurses nuns and babies, a great historical time piece set in the 1950’s - 1960’s

It’s a very good show with accurate history and (generally) good morals. It covers everything from contraception and abortion to women wearing pants. It is very pro religion on its own terms (unlike the new Father Brown which shows a Catholic priest with very pro modernist ideas).

I loved Call The Midwife while they were still following the memoirs, but lost interest after a main character left the show who I won’t say because spoilers.

Yes I love this show for the most part as well. However, I do feel that it portrays the time before birth control became available, as a time of poverty partly due to too many children born to impoverished parents! I feel like secular people would watch that and say “see – that’s why we needed birth control!”. For instance – see the following write-up: "Call the Midwife" Review: Thank God For Contraceptives

The show is excellent, as it’s about life

However, this season the lent support to making abortion, legal. Although the sisters are not pro abortion.

For me, the best episode is back when Sister Julian helped to deliver the 6th child for a woman who had five boys. This was when they began giving child birth in hospitals. She wanted a girl in the worst way. Anyway, the child was born deformed and would not live. They could not determine the sex of the child and the hospital nurse removed the child to another room. Sister Julian went into the other room and saw that the baby was placed on a cabinet shelf next an open window. Sister Julian quickly took the child and wrapped it into a blanket and held it until it died. She told the nurse that regardless of the development of the child, it’s a life and needs our compassion and comfort.

When the mother asked for the child, she was informed about the deformity and how it had not survived. The mother asked if it was a girl, and Sister Julian said, it was a girl.

Feeling guilty for telling a white lie, Sister Julian turned to Monica Jones and asked her if in such a case, is telling a lie was wrong ? Sister Monica Jones said, “if it’s done in order not to be cruel, then there is no harm.” Paraphrasing here.

Some of the lines delivered are just amazing. “The hands of the Almighty are so often to be found at the ends of our own arms.”

It’s well done and very well written. I watched all the seasons on Netflix. However, I felt like there was a subtle liberal agenda running through it which I didn’t appreciate. Maybe it was just my perception, but I felt like the message on abortion was how terrible life was when it was illegal and women were “forced” to risk their lives to abort; the message on homosexuality was how terrible and unfair life was when the lesbian women had to hide their relationship; the message on contraception was how liberated women were when the pill came about. It wasn’t bad enough for me to turn it off, but it definitely left a bad taste in my mouth.

I enjoyed the first couple of episodes, but found that the remaining episodes held no resemblance whatsoever to the book she published.

oh no! now I am halfway thru season 3. already some characters I liked have left. you mention when they stopped following the memoirs…when is this? have you read the book?

I’ve never seen it, and I hope its a good moral show to watch. I’d love to have good moral Catholic movies to watch every night with my family and friends.

Why don’t you start a thread for that? Every once in a while a thread comes up, but a thread for good Christian/ Catholic movies would be great.

I second that, Love this show and all its characters.Started watching four years ago.Once it’s off the air I plan to indulge in watching all the seasons I missed.😉

They’ve commissioned a series a year until 2022 (Series 11), so you’ll be waiting a while. ❤️

I was trying not to give spoilers.
Basically, when the character who is the author left.
