Why does it say in several scriptures to call upon his name but what is his name? And what does mean?

Here is St. Augustine’s explanation

this confession is to be understood as praise, just as these words of our Lord, “I confess to You, O Father, Lord of heaven and earth.” Matthew 11:25 For after commencing with praise, calling upon God is wont to follow, whereunto he that prays does next add his longings: whence the Lord’s Prayer itself has at the commencement a very brief praise, in these words, “Our Father which art in Heaven.” Matthew 6:9 The things prayed for, then follow…This also follows, “Tell the people what things He has done;” John 21:17 or rather, to translate literally from the Greek, as other Latin copies too have it, “Preach the Gospel of His works among the Gentiles.” Unto whom is this addressed, save unto the Evangelists in prophecy?

Theodoret of Cyrus says something similar

For “call upon”, Symmachus said “proclaim.” the verse urges them to offer thankful hymn singing and recount the divine favors

And St. Jerome says

There will be no setting up of idols in our hearts, but we shall call upon the Lord and He Himself will be our redemption.

1 Corinthians 1:2 Unto the church of God which is at Corinth, to them that are sanctified in Christ Jesus, called to be saints, with all that in every place call upon the name of Jesus Christ our Lord, both theirs and ours:

When I call upon God’s name,
I call upon the name of Jesus.
What does his name mean (I think that’s what you’re asking)? Salvation

OK. So I have a very close friend who is a JW. We spend hours reading scriptures, he from his bible, I from mine. And of course being that I am a Catholic there are issues that come up (many issues lol). So of course the big one is that fact that as a Catholic I do not refer to God as Jehovah. He says that Jehovah is metions thousands of times in the bible originally but has been taken out by other faiths. He goes on to say, “Do you not ever wonder why His name has been taken out of the Bible. It is because Satan does not want you to get close to God and if you do not say Jehovah when asking for help then you will never truelly be close to God.”

Jehoveh is not taken out of the Bible, you find יהוה all over the OT, which is properly translated into Lord. I thank you very much. That is exactly what i needed. I wanted to know the translation and meaning of God’s name, not to convince my friend because i have come to realize that most JW do not accept anything other then what is black and white and on THEIR version of the bible translation. I just wanted to know for my peace of mind. I have recently begun my journey back to God and have never really looked into these issues before. God bless you and best of luck with your ms.

That’s right. Strictly speaking they can never be sure too whether it is really ‘Jehovah’. In ancient Scripture it was only written as ‘YHWH’ as Hebrew has no vowel. Neverthteless, the name of God is so sacred that it was simply not vocalized. So in the Bible we simply use the word ‘Lord’ or Hebrew’s equivalent.

Just wondering. If the Hebrews could not verbalize the real name of God because it is so sacred that He called himself ‘I AM’, what makes your JW friend can do otherwise? And how are they so sure that it is Jehovah or pronounced ‘Jehovah’? Or maybe the name was revealed to John Smith?

And BTW, tell your friend not to worry. Many a prayer answered since the beginning of the ages and all we need to do to call upon the Lord and direct our thought and prayer to Him.

Before he made up his own religion, Charles Russell worked as a tailor. He was raised a Congregationalist, but at the age of 17 he tried to convert an atheist to Christianity and ended up being converted instead; not to atheism, but to agnosticism. Some years later he went to an Adventist meeting, was told that Jesus would be back at any time. He started his own Bible study group in 1872, who, properly called themselves “Russellites.” The Russellites named him “Pastor,” even though he had only a 7th grade education.
The life of Christ shows Him as a holy example to His followers; but the life of Charles Russell shows how he was an outright scoundrel, and was often caught at it! Russell was proven even in court to be a habitual liar and premeditated perjurer in a libel lawsuit that he brought against a Protestant minister, J. J. Ross. He was successfully sued for divorce and alimony by his wife Maria Ackley in 1906 for his “conceit, egotism, and domination.” He cheated many people out of millions of dollars when he sold his “miracle wheat,” claiming it would grow five times better than regular wheat. In fact, as was proven in court, it grew slightly less well than regular wheat. Later, he marketed a fake cancer cure and what he called a “millennial bean!” (Beans, beans, good for the heart!!)

In 1879, he founded the Watchtower Bible and Tract Society (WB&TS) with headquarters in Brooklyn, NY as a teaching arm of the organization. When Russell died in 1916, his successor, “Judge” (not a real judge) Joseph R. Rutherford, changed the name of the sect to the Jehovah’s Witnesses in order to “sound more biblical.”

Be careful of ones who try to make it sound like we hold Russel and Rutherford as prophets. We do not. Next they will posting quotes from 100 year old Watchtowers to stop you from considering what the witnesses show you from your own Bible.

You see though, that with a little persuasion others will acknowledge that God’s name is Jehovah or Yahweh. Most translations of the Bible have replaced it with LORD. That gets confusing since many people are called by the title ‘Lord’ in the Bible.
Lord is a title (like president or king) not a name.

The scripture you quoted refers to a name.
