There was another video-clip uploaded to YouTube.com which describes the founding and work of the Missionaries of the Poor. If I’m not mistaken, it’s a short clip from EWTN’s hour-long documentary of the MOP community. Really powerful stuff! And relevant watching, I think, for anyone who is discerning whether God is calling him/her to the religious life, or even perhaps whether Our Lord is giving him/her a “call within a call,” like what happened to Blessed Mother Teresa, and also apparently to Fr. Richard Ho Lung, founder of the MOP and before that a Jesuit priest and professor.

Called By God

Have any of the readers here experienced something similar? Are you willing to share it with us?

There is a short online video which gives a look at the faith and work of the Missionaries of the Poor, a Catholic community of religious brothers which was founded in 1981 by Fr. Richard Ho Lung and is headquartered in Jamaica. I found it rather inspiring:

Unto The Least

Let’s keep them in our prayers. And it looks like they need some young American, Canadian, and European men to join! 🙂 If they can hack it! 😃

I want to thank Truth_Is_Good for posting the links to those videos, and I want to thank all of my friends in these forums for their prayers and encouragement.

Some of you may know that back in 2005 I spent three months living, working, and praying with the M.O.P. Brothers at the their headquarters in Kingston, Jamaica. When I came home I had some fears and doubts, but by Jan. '06 I made up my mind, in the context of prayer, to definitively pursue a vocation with this wonderful community.

Well, it took well over a year, but my “ducks” are all “in a row” now, and as of tomorrow evening I’ll be flying out of my hometown in TN to the international airport in Ft. Lauderdale; and the next morning at 6:00am I’ll be boarding a flight for Cap-Haitien, Haiti. I will (God willing that I persevere) complete my first year of formation (aspirancy + postulancy) at the M.O.P. mission house in Haiti, and then will (God willing) transfer to the headquarters in Jamaica to begin novitiate.

Please continue to pray for me, that I might persevere, that I might everyday die to self and selfishness and live for God alone. And if you are a young man (16 - 30 something) who even might be considering religious life, please watch the videos linked above, and then consider making a short trip down to Jamaica ( a “come and see” visit). Come and see whether Our Lord may be calling to you a life of prayer and a life service to the least of our brothers and sisters.

I almost forgot to mention, the M.O.P. at all of their mission houses and at their headquarters in Jamaica are very welcoming to visitors who would like to share for a short time (a few days or even a few weeks) in their life of prayer and service to the poor. Men and women – Catholics, non-catholics, even non-Christians – already come down in small and large group, or as individuals, throughout the year, and that’s how I got my start with them too, back in 2003!

Come and visit us!

“It is a great joy to serve Christ in the poor.”
  • Fr. Richard Ho Lung, founder and superior general of the Missionaries of the Poor

Good luck brother! You are now a spiritual soldier for Christ. Semper Fidelis!

After I have completed the first year with my company, I will receive one week vacation. I plan on spending a few days with a community in contemplation and prayer. Pray for me!
